“Mrs. Sanchester is waiting.” She stepped away for me to move in.

I followed her as she led the way. I kept looking around. The interior was breathtaking. Each furniture had a unique design. The artifacts were beautiful and looked original. Large paintings hung on the tall walls. I wondered how much the one that looked like someone had thrown up on it cost. What really went through these painters’ heads?

“Did Mrs. Sanchester announce to everyone I was coming?” I asked after I noticed the way some of the maids were smiling at me.

“Not really. Everyone who works here knows you. Nana talks about you all the time. Nora made a bet with everyone that you’re going to have a boy, and Mrs. Sanchester adores you so much,” she said as we climbed the grand stairs with red Italian carpet running down the steps.

I felt a sudden tightness in my chest. It consumed me slowly. I was deceiving each one of them, and the guilt made me more nervous to be around them.

“Here.” She stopped in front of a door.

She knocked, and I heard Mrs. Sanchester’s voice.

“Come in.”

I took a glance at Sarah and let myself in.

“Chloe!” Nana screamed, standing up from her recliner.

“Hi, Nana.”

She wrapped me in a tight hug.

“You smell so good,” she whispered and pulled away.

“Thank you.”

“Hello, Chloe.” Mrs. Sanchester gave me a side hug and a kiss on the cheek.

She looked so delicate. I was scared to hug her back. Staring into those blue eyes, I felt sad.

“Welcome, sweetie,” she added with a broad grin.

I turned to look at an older lady who was sipping tea like she was in the presence of the queen. Her lips curled into a kind smile. She stood up and approached me. My eyes caught her platinum hair that looked too glossy for her age.

“This is my elder sister, Lilian,” Mrs. Sanchester introduced.

“Hi.”

“Come here, you doll.” She took me by surprise, giving me a warm hug and stroking my back.

“She is so beautiful,” she said with a scrutinizing gaze. “Now, I know why my naughty nephew couldn’t resist you,” she said, and they all laughed.

“How many months?” she asked, looking at my stomach that was too flat to convince anyone I was carrying a baby.

I tried to shoot it out, but I was scared they might notice since they all had their eyes on me.

“Three months.”

“Wow, and the baby bump is still hidden,” Lilian said, and I smiled with a shrug.

“It might show itself soon,” Nana said, coming to stand beside me.

I loved her so much.

At eighty-seven, she was still lively and strong. Both my grandparents were in home care, and every time we visited them, they only spoke to my parents ’cause they forgot we were their grandkids. My mom reminded them every time, but they still forgot.

“Do you take one of those yoga classes for pregnant women?” Lilian asked.
