“Adrian?”

“No.”

“Go to bed, Chloe. It’s late,” he said and walked away to the closet.

“Come on. It’s your birthday,” I groaned, and he said nothing.

“What about the cake? It cost me sixty dollars,” I said with a frown.

He pretended not to hear me.

“What a waste,” I sighed and walked out of the room.

I went downstairs and got a bottle of brandy from the wine cellar. I downed one glass of the alcohol and poured more.

I felt like I was dating a stranger. There was more to Tristan’s story. I wanted him to trust me enough to tell me. I had tried to remain patient with him, but each day felt like a mystery, and it terrified me that he might be keeping something big from me.

The doorbell echoed in the building. I was feeling too angry to face anyone. I took one more gulp and walked to the front door.

I opened the door without checking the door camera. My eyes widened in surprise at the person in front of me.

“Grey?”

“I know it’s all a lie. I know you are not pregnant,” he said breathlessly, like he had run a marathon to get here.

I stared at him, not sure what to say.

“Sorry it took me so long to figure it out,” he rasped. “Chlo.” He moved closer and held my face in his hands. “I messed up big time. What I did was very stupid. I can’t imagine how hurt you felt that day. I should have stayed and fought for you. I should have proven to everyone that the bastard was lying. I’m so sorry, Chloe.”

I pulled away, putting some space between us. He looked hurt, and I could see the guilt in his eyes.

“It’s fine, Grey. It’s in the past now,” I said, avoiding his eyes. I could still remember how he’d freaked me out last time I was in his apartment.

“I’m probably the worst boyfriend on earth.”

“Was,” I corrected him.

“Right,” he mumbled and stared at his feet and then back at me.

“It’s all my fault. I should have done something. I was so stupid.” He groaned and punched the air. “That bastard—”

“Don’t call him that,” I cut in.

He looked surprised.

“Chloe, he ruined your life. He took everything away from you. Are you happy here? Why did he do it? Did he tell you? Why is he keeping you here?!” he screamed the last sentence.

“I don’t know, but I’m glad to be far away from the people who broke my trust. The people I thought would fight for me and have my back through good and bad,” I said with my arms folded.

“You can move in with me. Stop playing along with his lies. I will speak to your family. I will try and convince them.”

“Good luck with that.” I heard Tristan’s deep voice from behind. It almost made me jump. I’d thought he was angry.

I saw Grey’s jaw clench, and his hands fisted. He looked like he wouldn’t mind killing Tristan right now.

“How did you get past the bodyguards at the gate?” Tristan asked.

“I told them I was family and showed them a picture of me and Chloe.” Grey shrugged.
