I felt nervous all of a sudden. Was he coming with everyone? Maybe they’d realized it was all a lie and wanted to ask for my forgiveness. I didn’t know his reason for the sudden meeting. Was I supposed to be excited or angry?

I should be mad at him. I should have ended the call immediately after I heard his voice, but I had been too scared that there might be an emergency, and also, I missed my dad.

“Chloe?” I heard my dad’s voice from behind.

I stood up to face him. It felt like forever since I’d last seen him.

“Hi, Dad.” My lips broke into a big smile.

“You look taller,” he said, staring at me from my head down to my feet.

“It’s been, like, seven months,” I said.

He took the seat across from me, and we ordered different drinks. He went for a beer, and I went for a tropical juice. I was disappointed my mom and sister hadn’t come, not like I’d expected them to.

“How are you?” he asked.

“How do I look?” I grinned.

“Better than I expected.”

“I’m happy, Dad. I really am.”

“I’m glad to hear that.”

“How is Ciara?” I asked.

“She was offered a job in Seattle, so she left.”

“Wow. How long?” I guessed I was really not part of the family since Ciara hadn’t cared to tell me.

“Last month.”

“What about Mom?” The wordMomtasted bitter on my tongue.

“She is doing okay; she misses you.”

I knew that was a lie.

“Sure,” I scoffed.

“How is … um … the baby? Is it a boy or a girl?” He looked happy.

“Isn’t it obvious already?” I tried to keep my voice down as anger gripped my every word.

No one would buy the lie anymore. There was no baby.

“There is no baby. There never was. It’s been almost a year, and look at me.”

He was tongue-tied for a few seconds. I fought the urge to stand up and leave. I could feel all the rage now, I remembered the look on their faces that day and how they threw me out. The night I had seen them laughing and dining like I never existed.

“I’m sorry,” was all he said, not even looking at me.

My hand balled into a fist under the table. What was I expecting from this meeting?

“I tried to talk to your mom, but she was so adamant. I could tell something didn’t seem right, but I—”

“You never cared,” I cut in bitterly.
