“I’m not feeling too well. I will go up and rest my head.” I dropped the knife, quickly walking out of the kitchen.

I locked the door to my room and sat at the foot of the bed.Everyone knows the truth? Then, why am I not happy? The truth was out, but it still felt like something was missing. I wasn’t thrilled with the news. This was what I’d wanted, but it didn’t seem like I cared anymore.

I swallowed the dryness in my throat and lay on the bed. Life was so complicated.

I should go and apologize to Adrian; he hadn’t meant any harm. I found him in the living room on the phone with someone. He whispered into the phone when he saw me and ended the call.

“I’m sorry I walked away like that. It’s all too much to handle,” I said.

“It’s okay, but how long do you plan on hiding?” he asked me as I walked to the dining room.

“If you want me to leave, I will leave. I’m not ready to face everyone. I want to be alone even if it has to be a year.”

“I’m not asking you to leave. I can’t keep lying and watching them suffer. Tristan is in deep shit because he is at fault for your disappearance. I’m not trying to save him, but things could get worse if you don’t come out.”

I sat on the nearest seat and groaned. This was way harder than I’d expected.

“I’m not ready,” I told him, almost breaking down in tears again.

“I know how hard it must be for you. Take your time. I will wait, I don’t care how long.”

I stood up and gave him a hug. We both needed it. He hugged me in return, stroking my back.

“Sorry if I’m giving you a hard time,” I said against his chest and inhaled his nice cologne.

“It’s fine,” he whispered.

The whole drama with Karen must be taking a toll on him. He’d been avoiding the topic, but I knew he was still hurting.

“Chloe?”

We both heard Tristan’s voice.

CHAPTER35

CHOICES

“Shit!” Adrian mumbled, quickly removing his arms from around me.

We pulled away from each other and turned to look at Tristan. He looked like a dead man walking. His eyes were pale and bloodshot. He wore a peach sweatshirt and black jeans. His hair looked fuller, and his stubble was slowly being replaced with a beard.

His blue eyes stared at me. I clenched my fists, digging my nails into my palms. There was dark anger within me that needed release.

“Asqueroso pedazo de mierda!” I said with gritted teeth. It was one of the insults I’d picked up from Vina. It meantdisgusting piece of shit.

He looked so surprised. He said my name again but in a soft whisper, like he couldn’t believe it was me. He took a step toward me. I stepped back, frowning. He stopped and tried to say something, but no words left his lips.

His eyes moved from me to Adrian. He now looked pissed.

“You kept her here? She has been with you all this time?” His voice rose at the end of his sentence. He looked betrayed as he stared at his best friend.

“She didn’t want anyone to know.”

“You should have at least …” He stopped and groaned, not knowing what to say.

I wanted talk, but I stopped myself. I didn’t want to utter a word to Tristan. I got furious, just staring at him. His eyes stayed on me. Our eyes met for a brief moment, but I looked away and headed for my room.

“Chloe,” he called, coming after me.
