“A couple of weeks now.”

“Disturbing and hot at the same time.” Truly sighed.

“Yeah, I don’t know whether to put new locks on the door or buy myself a pair of crotchless panties,” I said only half-jokingly because truth was that I had hoped my mixed-up feelings for Kid would have been resolved after all these years, but that was not even close to being true.

“Do you hear from him at all, except for the staring at your bedroom window in the dark thing?” Truly wondered.

“No. I don’t. Not at all and you make it sound so creepy.” I frowned.

“It’s not exactly without the creep factor.” Melody pointed out.

“Disturbing.” Truly repeated. “Why not just go out and call him on it?”

“I thought about it. But…” I hesitated as I took the joint from Truly.

“But what?” Melody asked.

“But…I don’t know. Maybe I’m afraid.”

“I get it.” Truly said. “Kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation with a whole lot of other crap mixed in.”

“Be careful, honey.” Melody’s eyes were filled with concern. “He’s not who you think he is, not anymore anyway.”

“He’s gone from bad boy to dangerous man.” Truly nodded. “I know Kid cared for you, Liddy. In his way, he still might. But I don’t think that being the object of his attention is something you want anymore. He’s a Sinner through and through now. You saw him in action at the bar. You might want to think about that the next time you are feeling all sentimental and secure with him waiting in the dark outside your door.”

I bit my lip and took a sip of the iced tea sitting in front of me. There was a distinct pause as we all pondered the discussion.

Then the conversation naturally moved on to Baby Boo’s latest accomplishments, the newly opened nail salon on Fifth and Main, and the latest town gossip. When Melody announced that she wanted to makeover the living room we spent some time looking at paint swatches and all things Shabby Chic on Pinterest.

“Damn it all to holy hell!” Melody almost knocked over the glasses on the table as she jumped up from the couch and ran to look out the window. The rumble of engines cut through the quiet of the afternoon and came thundering down the street. They stopped in front of the house next door to Melody’s and were followed by a large moving van. The three of us watched on from the window as pieces of dark leather and heavy wood furniture were emptied from the van and walked into the house by a six-man crew from the Silver Sinners MC.

Melody’s neighborhood was old-time working-class where the houses were all either craftsman-style or small ranch homes. Most, if not all, dated back to the 1950s when Cooper’s Paper Mill was thriving. The old mill had shut down several years ago but had recently been reconstructed into affordable housing apartments. The neighborhood had been slowly changing as the former mill workers died off and were replaced by people who were …let’s just call it less motivated.

“I knew it, I goddamn knew that I was gonna end up with shitty neighbors, but I never expected this.” Melody lamented.

“What happened to Mrs. Haggerty?” Truly asked.

“Moved in with her daughter, and I swear if I knew ahead that she was going I would have begged her to take her with me. She was a sweet lady and a great neighbor. But this neighborhood isn’t what it used to be, and she’ll be a whole lot safer living somewhere else. The inside of the house is a bit dated as you would expect, but otherwise in really good shape. Not surprised it went as quickly as it did. Big corner lot, fenced-in yard. I was hoping that a nice family with a couple of kids would buy it.” Melody sighed and shook her head sadly. “I thought it’d be good for Boo to have someone to play with when he got a little older. Just my shitty luck that it didn’t turn out that way.” As if he had heard what his mother had said, Boo started crying. When Melody went to pick him up from his nap, Truly turned to me.

“The Sinners have been dabbling in real estate for a while now.” She explained. “It started with flips… straight in and out. But more recently they have begun investing in business opportunities. They also have a couple of apartment houses, and then there’s this.” Truly pointed towards the window. “They are investing in private real estate. They keep going like they have been and pretty soon the Silver Sinners are gonna own half the town.”

“Yeah, well I’ve been hoping that it wouldn’t be my half.” Melody was back with a still sleepy, thumb-sucking Boo in her arms. His little head rested on her shoulders. His birth was a mystery to all of us. One day, Melody had just left town without a single word, and the next thing anyone knew she was back toting baby Boo. It was all very strange and out of character for Melody to keep a secret from us. Especially one as big as that one. But she had had never shared the details of anything about her pregnancy or Boo’s birth. And although Truly and I had spent countless nights speculating about what the hell could have happened there…we never pushed for an answer and Melody never volunteered one. The whole thing was strange as hell. Melody hadn’t been seeing anyone at the time…no one in particular anyway. If she knows who Boo’s father is she never shared.

“Do you know which Sinner bought it?” I turned my attention back to the matter at hand.

“No clue. I suppose that information has been in the real estate section of the newspaper, but honestly, I’ve been trying to forget about it.” Melody made a face of disgust. Then we all moved into the kitchen. Melody handed Boo over to my loving arms while she started to put together an afternoon snack suitable for a one-year-old.

We all watched on in quiet fascination as Boo fisted the little rubber-tipped spoon and attempted to shovel up a bunch of orange mush into his mouth After missing twice and leaving smears all over his plump baby cheeks, Boo finally managed to reach his target. We all clapped and yayyed for him until he giggled with glee. Boo was the little sunshine in all of our lives and just thinking about him had gotten me through some not-so-great moments. He was a happy little thing, and Melody was a shining example of what a good mother should be. She was his mom but really he belonged to all of us.There was nothing that we wouldn’t do for him.

Kid Harding

Five years without seeing Liddy and now she was everywhere. I seriously could not go anywhere without catching a glimpse of her. It’s not like I was stalking her either. As it turns out I liked going to that fancy coffee shop in the west end. And the bookstore on First and Fenn had a good section on motor mechanics. Some of the guys started to give me shit about my new fascination with espresso, and my new library shelf filled with books on engine work, but fuck ‘em. And no, I don’t think it’s fucking weird that it just so happens that although I see Liddy around town, she doesn’t always see me. It’s not like I plan it that way. Like I said...nobody’s stalking nobody.

But tonight had been different. When I clocked her, she had been standing right across the bar from me at Savages. I tracked her as she jockeyed a position through the crowd to order a couple of drinks from Jimmy, the bartender. Before she could pull out her money, I rapped on the bar twice with my skull ring and lifted my chin in her direction. Jimmy knew to put it on my tab. When he refused her payment and nodded towards me, Liddy leaned on the bar as if her body was reaching for mine. Damn if those cat-like green eyes didn’t pull me in like a magnet. Then she had given me that sad, soft, yearning kind of smile that was meant to tell me a shitload of things that I didn’t want to hear from her. So, me being the bastard that I pride myself on being, turned away from Liddy and sauntered over to my boys and some of the club whores who had come out with us that night. We called those bitches band-aids because they’re cheap, do the job, and are disposable. Yeah, I know…not exactly a respectful term but really, it’s hard to think highly of any woman who hands out blowjobs a half dozen at a time.

I turned around to make sure Liddy was still watching me. Then I tagged Brittany off her seat and onto my lap. I grabbed her ample hips and ground her apple ass into my crotch. Then to Brittany’s squealing delight, I juggled her big tits in my hands. When I saw Liddy’s cheeks blush a hot red, I was satisfied that I had hit my mark. But when she grabbed her coat and headed out of the bar, something burned around the place where my heart used to be.

All interest in Brittany immediately disappeared when Liddy walked out the door. So, after handing Brittany off to a brother, I turned my attention to the card game that was going on in the corner. I am pretty good at reading a hand and usually walk away with a couple of extra bucks in my pocket. But tonight, thanks to Liddy Fucking Hall. I couldn’t concentrate and lost a shitload of money. I paid up, headed out the door, and made a plan. I was going to get on my bike and ride straight to Liddy’s house. Only this time I wasn’t going to cut the engine and sit in the dark. This time I was gonna ride loud and hard. I was going to shine my headlamp straight into her goddamn bedroom window. I was going to make damn sure that there’d be no question who it was on the other side of the door. Then with one hard kick, I’d shatter the wood and help myself to Liddy in any way I wanted to.
