“Not as mad as I was.”

“Okay then. Just go easy on me.”

And that’s how Aunt Betty and Deke Harding found us…me forgetting my own misery for a minute and ministering to Kid’s bitten up hand and Kid letting me do it. There was a moment of silence filled with surprising astonishment

Then my aunt turned to Kid’s dad and said. “They’re both going to need tetanus shots you know.”

Deke Harding nodded in agreement. “I gotta guy.”

If Kid and I weren’t quite friends after that, as time marched on we grew pretty close to it. Kid stopped the merciless teasing and interfering, and I started letting him walk home with me. Eventually, Deke Harding had moved the national headquarters to Abbot Hill and that had brought with it a whole bunch of even more Silver Sinners and their families to our town. By the time high school rolled around all the Sinner kids and all the park kids pretty much hung out together.

A couple of weeks before graduation my friends and I were at Goose Pond doing our thing when Kid Harding and his crew showed up. They had a rope swing, a big cooler full of beer, and baggies full of weed. We all swam and took turns jumping and swinging from the thick, twisted rope. We played chicken on the boy’s shoulders and shared our submarine sandwiches with them, and they shared their beer and pot with us. Eventually, more and more kids made their way to the pond, and it ended up being a real party.

“So, you and Romeo going to the prom?” Kid plopped down next to me. I handed him the joint that I had been smoking. He took a big toke, then handed it back to me and leaned back on his elbows. “What the hell kind of name is that anyway…Romeo?”

“This coming from a boy named Kid.” I took out the roach clip in my pocket and inhaled the last bit of the joint. “Nah, I think he wants to go, but it’s kind of not my thing. You going with Izzie?”

“Shit no.” I was just a little high and Kid looked so horrified at the thought of going to the dance, it made me giggle.

He grinned back at me and when the dimples popped out of his cheeks, I saw real clear what all the fuss was about. It seemed like every girl in town had a thing for Kid Harding. And I had to admit he had grown into one sweet lookin’ boy. He was tall and muscular. He wore his silky blonde hair long and rode a Harley to school. That old sayingall the girls wanted him and all the guys wanted to be himreally applied where Kid Harding was concerned.

Every single girl that he went out with, and there were plenty, hated me. Hated me with a kind of green-eyed jealousy that I totally understood. Because even though there had never been even the slightestthatbetween us, Kid had a habit of looking at me like I was an ice cream cone on a hot summer day. And somewhere along the way, I had begun to notice him noticing me.

Because like I said…one sweet lookin’ boy.

Just the thought of those bad boy lips on mine made me shiver with a delicious mixture of delight and more than a little fear.

“You cold, Liddy?” When Kid put his towel over my shoulders, I had the sudden urge to grab his hands and fill them with my tingling breasts.

“So, you and Romeo? You guys like…uh…serious?” Kid’s attention was suddenly focused on a blade of grass.

The question surprised me. I shrugged my shoulders because I never really thought about Romeo and me being serious, which I guessed meant that we weren’t.

“He’s okay but serious isn’t a word I’d use for us. He’s fun to hang out with most of the time. But I don’t think we’ll be athingfor much longer.”

“Yeah? Why not?’ Kid suddenly looked up; his eyes laser-focused on mine.

“Me and him haven’t… ya know…” I blushed so hard that I was sure my face turned purple.

“Oh.” Kid said and there was that grin that made my toes tingle.

“Wipe that grin off your face, Kid Harding.” And just like that my embarrassment turned to anger because that boy could really rile me up. “It’s no fun being the last virgin in the senior class.”

Kid choked so hard on his beer that I had to hit him solidly on the back to help him catch his breath. “You are shitting me.” He finally spouted out gleefully. “You didn’t give it up to Jack Curtain?”

“I was fourteen years old when I went out with Jack, Kid.” I huffed.

“How about Lucas Pullman?”

“Nope. He dumped me for Lizzie Robinski before we got around to it.”

“Gabe Howard?”

“Ugh! Absolutely not with Gabe Howard.” I made a face because Gabe had been a terrible kisser…wet and sloppy. I had broken up with him in the middle of our first make-out session.

“Sometimes I wish I had just done it with one of them and gotten it all over with.” I sighed. Then I looked at Kid. “So, I think it’s a pretty safe bet that you’re not one.”

“One what? A virgin? Definitely not.” He looked horrified at the thought. “You know if you just want to get it over with? I’d be down for that. I mean your first time you should be with someone you trust.”
