Page 8 of Areyna's End

The plan had been simple; kill a few humans to distract the Council, a smoke screen if you will. Keep them focused on the school’s problems allowing me to get closer to Areyna and the other heirs. Once that was under way, I was supposed to go in and force the council to move the heirs to a safer location, but they all showed no fear for their children’s safety. It was almost as though they just didn’t care about them at all. Once I realised that, I decided to focus more on my own goals and that’s how I ended up faking my own death.

I had to make Areyna the bad guy in the hybrid’s eyes in order to get her alone. Sew dissention in their ranks and create a divide that couldn’t be repaired. Areyna was supposed to react how she did, running off alone where I could get to her and pick up the pieces of her shattered soul, but those unpredictable assholes found her first. I didn’t take their stupid bond with her into account. My father warned me that there might be an issue with her bonding with others. I should have listened to him.

He’d explained that the only other hybrid to have bonded with their partners, went through three phases; the first was binding the potentials to her, the second was feeding from them and cementing the bond, the third was to perform the mating ritual. My father never explained that part to me, but I’d assumed it was just sex, I’m beginning to second guess that now.

I really should have listened to my father.

I won’t fuck up a second time.

I will get her away from them. No matter what it takes.

I sneak into the house, careful not to be seen and hide out in my room. I can hear everything going on around me, but I pay them no mind as I gather the things I’ll need once I get Areyna away from them. The rest of the vampires are counting on my father’s plan to cure the fucking plague that’s been wreaking havoc with us pure bloods. What we, vampires, haven’t let the rest of the Supernatural breeds know is that the plague hasn’t just made us sick, it’s made us infertile. There hasn’t been a single vampire birthed in over ten years now. My father’s plan for Areyna is to use her hybrid turned blood to turn more vampires, increasing the vampire's numbers. At least that’s what he’s told me, honestly I get the feeling he’s got a lot more planned than he’s let on. He acts like Armageddon is just around the corner whenever I try asking him for more information.

We aren’t the only supernatural breed to be suffering from this issue though, the Demon’s and Fae’s numbers have been declining as well, which leads me to believe I’m right; My father is planning something bigger behind the scenes. The only question is what has he got planned and is it going to stop me from reaching my goals with regards to Areyna?

I just hope I didn’t go through all this to have my plans fall apart now. Not when I’m so close to achieving my goal.

Remmie

I removemy wrist from Areyna’s mouth, a single drop of blood dripping down my wrist as I back away. She’s had almost everything we can give her and it’s still not enough to bring her back to consciousness. Jason refused to help; I can’t figure him out. He screamed blue murder when he thought she was going to die, but now that he knows she won’t, he’s back to treating her like… well, a monster.

I wonder if all humans who learn about our world would treat us that way.

“Rem, can I talk to you for a minute?” Derrin asks, interrupting my musings.

“Sure.” I follow him through Areyna’s house, down the stairs and out the back door before he turns on me and starts speaking a mile a minute. “We can’t stay here. That human is a liability. If he doesn’t want Areyna here, then we should just take her and go. I know we can’t keep her at your place, and Torren’s is out of the question with his dad being such a tight ass, but what if we take her to my place. We could set her up in the cabin down by the lake.”

“No.” I hold my hand up when he begins to protest. “We can’t kidnap her from her home. Think about it rationally. Jason is a police detective. He’s going through a rough time right now. Just lost his best friend and partner, the body went missing before the police arrived on the scene and he has no one else to blame except Areyna. He’s not going to let us take her, even if he says he doesn’t want her here.” I give him a few seconds to come to terms with what I’ve told him before continuing. “We can’t keep staying here either. My mum has been ringing me nonstop all day asking where I’ve been. We also can’t miss any more school. We have to keep up appearances or we’re going to risk exposure.”

“We’re already risking exposure. What we did today with all those people, Richard’s body going missing and the police ruling it a missing person because we couldn’t give them any details. Everything we do lately is risking our exposure.” Derrin snaps.

He’s right. Ever since we met Areyna, we’ve been skirting the line between acceptable risk and hard risk. I sigh, “Then we need to leave Areyna in Jason’s hands. We have to return to our homes and pretend everything is normal for a while. That includes going back to school.”

“We can’t leave her here. Jason’s unstable. He might hurt her.” Derrin runs his hands through his hair as he leans against the side of the house. “We also don’t know how the bond will react; she’s fed off us so many times that I can feel the bond now.” Derrin looks like he needs a good night’s sleep. We all look pretty worse for wear but Derrin more so. “When was the last time you fed?” I ask. When he doesn’t answer my question, I move closer to him, leaning my shoulder on the wall near him. “Look, from everything I’ve learned about Jason; he loves her, he’d never hurt her. You need to trust me; I’ll be right next door and can run over here in seconds. Go home, deal with all the stuff you need to, then come back, but you need to feed before you go. Leave Areyna with the human, I promise he won’t hurt her.”And if he does, I’ll kill him.I don’t say it out loud though.

“Maybe, but that doesn’t mean he can protect her.” I’ve never seen Derrin look so broken before. I wish there was more I could do for him, but the truth is, we’re all barely hanging in there. I pat his shoulder consolingly, “Jason’s a human who’s been living in our world for years, he’ll keep her safe.”

“I agree with Remmie, we need to pretend everything is normal for now. Go home, go to school, keep the council from coming to investigate, but above all, we need to show Areyna that just because she took a life, she isn’t a monster.” Torren says.

I feel like now is the time to tell them both my suspicions. What I felt earlier could be nothing, but it could be everything we need to return to normal and to help Areyna. “I’m not entirely sure she did take a life. Right before I sent the driver on his way, I felt a presence near the house. I swear it was Richard, but it felt off, almost like it was him, but wasn’t him. I know that doesn’t make sense, but it’s what I felt.” I whisper the words, unsure if I should be saying anything, but knowing that it has to be said. Especially if I’m right and there’s something far more sinister going on here than we believe.

“You think he’s still alive?” Derrin asks, a look of hope taking over his dark blue eyes.

Torren is our voice of reason when he asks, “Then why wouldn’t he just come out into the open. Why wouldn’t he put Areyna and Jason out of their misery?”

“I don’t know, but I think we’re missing something big here. The only way we’re going to find out is by returning things to normal and going about our daily lives.” I lean in close to both of them and whisper as quietly as I can, “We’re being watched right now, I don’t know who they are but there’s three of them.” Out loud I say, “We really do need to go back to school. One more day off and we’ll be stuck in detention for wagging.” Under my breath I hiss, “Two near the fence behind you and one in my yard near the gate. They feel like vampires, full bloods.”

Derrin continues to talk about school out loud; He mentions a test we have coming up and I quickly whisper, “They’re armed and wearing camo armour. We need to get back inside.”

“Shit.” Derrin hisses under his breath. He’s smart enough not to turn around and look, but I catch Torren turning his head as I say out loud, “We need to figure this out, but for now, let’s go check on our girl and get some food.” My words cause Torren to snap his head back to me before he gives away the fact that we know we’re being watched.

The moment we’re back inside, I quickly tell Torren to check the front door while I grab Jason and fill him in on the fact that we’re being watched. Derrin runs upstairs to check on Areyna.

Jason’s grey eyes narrow on me before he casually walks over to the kitchen window, grabs a glass from the side of the sink, fills it and proceeds to drink the entire glass while staring out the window. I cock my head to the side as he rinses the glass and then meticulously dries it before placing it away in the cupboard near the window. I know for a fact that that cupboard does not hold the glasses, so I’m even more curious what he’s really doing as he then grabs something taped to the inside of the door and turns his back on the window.

Not many things shock me but seeing Jason, a human, holding what looks like a grimoire has my jaw practically hitting the ground. “Are you a-.” I don’t get the chance to ask him if he’s a witch, he shushes me and then opens the book. Even my enhanced hearing can’t hear the words he’s chanting under his breath, but I can feel the power coming off of him in waves. Whatever he’s doing is causing an effect on the entire house if the sudden glow surrounding everything is anything to go by. It’s over in the blink of an eye, but Jason practically slumps where he’s standing as though he’s been at this for hours.
