“Stefano is going and that should be sufficient backup for this type of problem solving. There will be other opportunities for your skills to be put to use.” He winked at me and began to walk toward the door. “Unlike your father, I value women and will make full use of all your assets.”

He shut the door behind him and I could hear him telling the guard to make sure that I stayed safely inside the room.

Forget falling back asleep, I was pissed off at not only being left behind, but given a babysitter, I started to get dressed having made sure that Luciano had enough time to leave the hallway. I waited to sneak out until the guard wasn’t looking, but playing on his phone.

Halfway down the hall toward the garage where the cars were parked, he realized that I was the person he was supposed to make sure stayed in the room.

“Hey wait! You can’t leave. He’ll kill me if something happens to you.” The guard called after me softly not wanting to awaken the whole house.

“Should have thought of that before I snuck by you.” I whisper yelled at him before turning a corner and picking up speed.

The halls were a maze, but I’d been watching carefully where I’d been taken each time and had a pretty good idea how to get out of the house. The biggest problem would be catching up with Luciano before his vehicle left the premises.

Not dressed in my normal attire, I stopped at the front door and realized that those were the tail lights of his vehicle driving away. It was too far for me to run out there even if I’d had my sneakers on, but then it might have been doable.

The guard finally caught up to me, but I was already willing to head back inside without a fight.

“Lady, come back inside and I won’t mention what happened,” he pleaded, holding his hands out.

Unsure of how to make me do what he wanted without touching me must have been hard on him. I would need to confess later because I didn’t want it to get back to Luciano that the guard didn’t do his job properly. I hated that I wasn’t the one in charge anymore. I needed to have that back.

I studied the guard and the panic was clear as day. I knew he was thinking about his punishment for this, so I needed to make sure I owned up to it with Luciano.

There was still a bit of kindness in me, but there weren’t many people that could bring it out.

I was feeling bored though and thought I’d have some fun with this guy before doing as he asked.

“What are you really going to do about it? It’s not like you can force me back there or carry me back either?” I taunted. It was uncalled for, and I realized that, but I was cranky and a little frustrated with how the day had gone.

It was then I noticed Angelo Romano standing in the connecting hallway that must have led to his section of the house.

“What is all the commotion?” he demanded, looking between the two of us standing there.

“I was ordered to keep her in the room, sir, but she snuck out. I chased her and wasn’t sure of the best course of making her go back.” He confessed to the don.

Angelo walked forward and I debated trying to fight him. He simply grabbed my arm and I let him. There wasn’t really a point in starting a fight when I already knew the outcome. It wasn’t like Luciano was going to come back just because I’d left the room.

He started to lecture me as he pulled me toward his son’s room; all the while the bodyguard was following behind us, trying to keep up.

“You know how much trouble you’re causing? I would love to take you out back and shoot you myself, but for some strange reason my son actually likes you.” He shook my arm as he dragged me down the hallway.

It took everything inside of me to not retaliate. He may be ruthless, but I was trained and had youth on my side. It didn’t help that he had an army at his disposal—like I used to.

“He’d better get you under control because if he doesn’t, I’m not afraid to shoot myself another Montrelli.” His words were ominous, but I wasn’t going to show fear or my seething anger. I didn’t mind biding my time.

I shook off his hand and opened the door to our shared room.

“Thank you for showing me back to my room. I needed a breath of fresh air and got all turned around.” I used my sweetest voice and acted like that had been the real reason I’d run through the house until they caught me. “It’s been a pleasure.” The sarcasm dripped from my tongue, but I closed the door in his face and made sure that I flicked the lock shut.

Luciano might be okay to be around, but I wasn’t taking any chances that someone might try to take me out before he got back. It was entirely possible. And as with Tony, I didn’t think my death would be avenged.

There would be a punishment in my future, but I would deal with that later. I knew with my strong will and stubbornness I would always be dealing with a punishment later. For now, sleep was the most pressing problem, and I needed to catch up because tomorrow was going to be a long day.

CHAPTER8

Luciano

I hatedto leave Bria behind, but she wasn’t ready to be introduced to all of our family business dealings. These types of introductions needed to be set up in stages. Especially since we needed to figure out what part of the family she’d be utilized in.
