Angelo already wasn’t on my good side, but now he was really pissing me off. The image of a knife splitting open his neck lingered at the forefront of my mind.

If I could just kill him and hide the body in cement, then my life’s mission would be complete. He could be tortured just a small little bit for all the pain he caused, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to get away with it if I got to spend quality time with him.

Would that ruin the marriage agreement between our families? I glanced at Luciano and realized that I wanted to keep him around for a while.I never considered that I might feel that way in an arranged marriage.

“I believe her. She hasn’t lied to me so far. There has to be a reasonable explanation for what happened.” Luciano was taking my side against his father? I bit the inside of my cheek to show my surprise.

Unbelievable. He must actually like me.

“You’re soft. You’ve already let her get into your head.” Angelo shook the knife in his son’s face. “Move and let me speak to her.”

“She doesn’t know anything about it. If she did, she’d be ready to go after the ones that did this as much as I do.” Luciano placed his warm hand on my knee and continued to stay between his father and me.

“We need to talk to Marco. He could be doing something and keeping her out of the loop. I’m not sure that he trusted everything to his second and certainly he didn’t seem to trust his daughter.” He glanced at me. “No offense to you, babe.”

“None taken,” I said.

He wasn’t wrong. My father wasn’t known for trusting others and he kept other things from me, so he could have kept this from me as well. I wondered if he ever actually thought of me as his second, his underboss?

“We could have lunch and discuss the problem. Then you’ll be able to see for yourself that we’re not lying,” I offered to help keep the peace.

“I want to speak to the girl that you found,” Angelo demanded, walking to the door in his silk, gray pajamas.

He acted so regal and in charge, but that only belied the fact that he was getting on in age. Luciano would be taking over in the next few years in the same way that my family business was shifting from my father to someone else.

I stood and got ready to follow him, but Luciano wrapped me in his arms, bringing me to a stop. I stared up at him.

“My family can’t be involved in something like this. It’s just not something we should do.” I shook my head as if pleading for him to believe me.

Luciano reached forward and gave me a tight hug. It was then I noticed he had blood splatters on his shirt. I knew that whoever had taken this girl was gone, but others were still involved and must pay for their actions.

He was obviously all right but that didn’t mean that my breath didn’t catch at the thought of losing him. Already he was more important to me than some feud between our families. I certainly didn’t want him dead.

“Can I speak with her? I’ll be more gentle than your father and I’m a woman. If she has been trafficked, then she’s not going to trust a man.”

“No, you’re going back to the room.”

Pissed off, I jerked out of his embrace. He couldn’t just placate me with affection to get me to do what he wanted. I didn’t want to be relegated to some room in the house where I was kept like a prisoner all the time. To only perform wifely duties. It would be as if I were trafficked as well.

He started to leave, but I grabbed his arm and flipped him to the ground in a self-defense move.

My foot moved to his chest, and I glared at him.

“Next time you threaten to have me put in my room like some bimbo, I’ll cut your throat in the middle of the night while you sleep,” I warned. He had to know that I was no fucking Suzie Homemaker.

He just laughed, and I wasn’t sure that I could control my actions from doing it now with how pissed I was. I stomped down on his chest with my foot like I was having a two-year-old tantrum and left in a huff, tromping down the hall back toward ‘my room.’ Hell, I hadn’t even been shown the promised room of my own. This whole situation was fucked up.

There was no way that they’d let me see the girl tonight. I was certain that a woman would get much further in questioning her but that wasn’t something I was going to get to do, at least not right now.

Luciano was following me, and at this point, I didn’t care. I was angry.

All my choices had been taken away from me in one day, and I couldn’t do anything about it. I was helpless. As helpless as that girl that was stolen from her life and made to do horrible things.

Our lives were so similar that it were as if I’d been the one sold. The reasons for the selling were different, but that didn’t make it any easier.

She’d been rescued, but I was going to be a prisoner for the rest of my life. Duty was going to be my bondage.

It wasn’t until we were just outside the door to the room that he grabbed me. He twirled me around until my back was slammed into the door, and he pushed his thigh between my legs, caging me between the door and his body.
