“Do you think I could thank the man who saved me?”

She had guts and courage and was ready to get started. “You bet.”

I texted Luciano to help start her on that path to recovery.

Me: I’m done. Can you have Stefano come to the door?

He messaged back almost immediately.

Luciano:Sure, why? I’m almost done here and he’ll come that direction.

Me: Elana wants to thank him.

Not even two minutes later, Gina stuck her head in the room. “Stefano is here for you.”

“I don’t want to talk to him myself, but can you tell him thank you for saving me.” Elana’s big eyes welled up with tears as she shook her head vehemently. “I’m still too scared, but I know that they did a good thing and they probably won’t hurt me. I just can’t face them yet.”

My heart ached again for her. To have that kind of fear that would prevent her from even thanking a person who helped her. I would make it my life’s mission to get my hands on every single person that had touched her and the women in her group.

“Absolutely, honey. I’ve taken care of that for you.” I stood and walked to the door. “He’s on the other side of the door and can hear you if you speak loudly.” I opened it just a little to allow him to hear.

She crept up off the bed and stood behind me out of sight. “Mister, I don’t know how to tell you, but thank you for rescuing me. It was a horrible life, and I’m very glad that I’m not there anymore. I’m sorry, I’m still too scared to face you, but at least you know how much being rescued meant to me.”

She stepped back into the room again, but still within easy reach of me.

“There, now you’ll feel a little better.” I impulsively hugged her and she shook in my arms. I held her for a couple seconds then released her. “Eat what the girls bring you, and I’ll check back in tomorrow. You’re doing great, Elana.”

I’d done all that I could here for the day. She was going to have to recover and learn to trust again.

The door closed behind me and Stefano escorted me straight to Luciano’s office.

“We need to take care of this business and figure out where the shipping container would have come from and where it was going.” I strode in ready to take on the world. “Luciano, do you know or have the paperwork on that shipping container with the guns? Is there any way that we can find out from Riccoli? I need to know everything so that we can find out who’s been doing this.” I was so strung up from my conversation with her that I paced around the room.

Luciano had the nerve to look at me before saying, “Don’t worry about it, we have it all handled.”

“Um, I don’t think you do and if I’m involved in this, then I want to work on it.”

“I’ve got guys handling it,” Luciano tried to assure me while he waved off my concerns. My concerns about human trafficking of young women and girls. “I’m working on our other business ventures, and I would like you to show me the ropes of your family’s business. So forget all this for now and just work with me. We can do this, we don’t have to be upset with each other over the past anymore.”

I simply laughed in his face.

“There’s no way I can forget about Elana and what’s been done to her. I want to work on this. I need to do something. I’m attached to her and want to make sure that it all gets taken care of. She needs to know that she is safe.”

He stood and came around the desk.

“If that is all, I’ll be in the other room, sir.” Stefano exited the room, leaving us alone as he shut the door with a click.

“I didn’t mean to forget about it forever. We would never do that. Just for right this minute. I brought you in here so we can have a little sexy fun time on the desk. But if you’re too worked up about business ventures rather than...” He trailed off.

“I know you have been looking into things. So you thought you could just butter me up with a few facts, some orgasms, then you were going to ask me how I run my business,” then I snap my fingers, “then whoosh you can take it over.” I pouted.

He placed his hand on my hip, pulling me with him as he took a seat on the edge of the desk. Then he positioned me into his arms where I couldn’t escape.

I hadn’t really been planning to try, but having him hunt me or work just a little harder to get what he wanted added way more to the thrill of our relationship. I loved making him work for it, because he always delivered.

“Not in the least do I want to take away from your position in your family. In fact, I want to shout it to everyone. I’m really proud of the person that I’m marrying. Your father had you working as his underboss, and I want to see how your part of the business is run. He undervalued you. I, on the other hand, want to see what you can do and how you handle things. That way when we merge everything together after a honeymoon, we can come back and take over Chicago. I know we will make a great team.” He wiggled his eyebrows up and down at me. “In every capacity of our relationship.”

Placated for now, she asked, “Where are we going on our honeymoon?”
