“A few hours. I’m just pissed that someone seems to be hunting you. I know it happens, but not to my woman.” His hands gripped my hips tighter. “I can’t help but wonder if this is an attempt to stop our two families from merging. What bothers me the most is how someone would have known that first day where you were headed?”

“There wasn’t enough chance for it to have leaked out through our families. Maybe they just want me and the merger has nothing to do with it.” Although for the life of me I couldn’t imagine why that would be the case. I mean I was a Montrelli, so I had enemies based on my name alone. All the assignments I took care of, I was thorough, no witnesses. No clue it was me.

“I simply don’t know, but we’re going to find out. Nothing is going to happen to you. I’ll level the town until we get some answers. I’m not going to let this continue. It’s an affront to both of our families.” He growled.

I held back a giggle because it made him seem much more fierce when he growled. “What are we doing today?”

“Well, we never made it to the apartment. It’s ready for whenever the girls want to move in.” His smile and willingness to get them settled in the middle of all that was going on made my heart melt just a little. Something I’d been doing a lot lately.

“I can call my sister and have her meet me over there this afternoon.”

He ran his hands up and down my legs, causing me to shiver and my nipples started to pucker. Last night was the first time since we’d been together that he didn’t exhaust me with his prowess. I thought I was getting a little addicted to Luciano.

“I’ll want the guards to move them. They’ll be staying with them at all times.”

“Well, Carina has a guard already and he attends class with her, but I’d like to have him as well as four rotating guards outside the apartment. Will that work?” I questioned.

He nodded. “That sounds doable.”

“Unless you have an issue with it, I already know who I would like to have as guards. There are two people from my father’s outfit that I’ve worked with from the beginning. I’d like to have them sent to the estate to keep watching her until we get her moved.” I waited anxiously for his approval.

“I think that’s fine. Extra protection is not bad in this type of situation.”

“All right, I’ll give my dad a call.”

Luciano kept rubbing my legs, and I was having a harder time concentrating. Watching him though, he wasn’t doing it to distract or to start something. He was doing it for comfort and it seemed to come natural to him. I wouldn’t be complaining.

“Hi, Dad. There was another attack on us yesterday. I’m not sure if you’ve heard about it yet, but just wanted to let you know everything’s okay. But due to that, would it be all right if I sent Alessia and Trevor over to watch Carina?” I paused and pulled the phone away so that he could rant about how dangerous the Romanos were. Luciano sighed—I gave him points for not rolling his eyes.

“Yes, I know she’s got Joey, and I’ll have him help out as well and take some shifts. I’d like to have the two of them make sure that she’s safe. She needs somebody that can go with her to and from classes and keep a lookout in between. The three of them can rotate until we know that someone isn’t targeting both of us.” I tried to pacify him in a calm manner.

“I know we don’t look alike anymore, but for some reason someone seems to be targeting me, and I don’t want to take a chance on having her hurt in the process. She’s my twin after all. If anybody ever took the time to do any research on me, they would know instantly she’s my greatest weakness.” I gave my attention back to Luciano, it might not just be her anymore.

My father grunted. “Very well, do what you must do. You’re taking over everything else anyway. It’s not like I really have a say in this anymore.” His words said he was hurt, but I knew that wasn’t true. He had some other ulterior motive that I had yet to figure out. I didn’t get why he wouldn’t offer up more guards for Carina to begin with, but he never did go above and beyond for us. I didn’t think it would be something I would ever understand.

“Thank you.” I told him and I truly meant it.

There was a cake tasting later and I was supposed to have hair and makeup come over for a trial run.

Now that I’d selected the dress, all the other stuff was moving rather quickly.

The cake tasting didn’t take very long because we both agreed that the lemon cake was not good at all. The red velvet just looked too gory considering the situation. So we went with a traditional vanilla for the large bride cake. Then for the groom’s cake, we chose chocolate so that way someone could find a cake that they would like. Traditional and classic. Perfect for an arranged marriage on the fly.

I had to rearrange the appointment with the hair and nail people the next day because we needed to check out the apartment so that I wouldn’t worry. That was more important to me than how I would look on my wedding day.

If everything was secured and good to go, then the girls would be staying their first night there. As soon as we finished with the bakers, we went to go get Elana and Carina settled into their apartment. The sooner I had them in a safe place and away from the family compounds, the better I would feel.

I was impressed because Luciano already had it fully furnished, so there would be no need for them to worry about towels and dishes or other extras. They would only need their personal items. Elana would need time to build her collection, but Carina could easily store all her belongings in here.

I looked around in awe at the clean lines and higher end furnishings. “Was this an executive apartment?”

“Yes, it was. No one’s been using it for a while, and I thought that rather than letting it sit here abandoned, we could let the two of them use it until they are able to make a plan for themselves. We can always move them somewhere else later if we need to, but it has the best security because of the type of visiting dignitaries that crash here. We didn’t want visiting dignitaries murdered in their beds.”

“Agreed. That would have been problematic when trying to get things accomplished.”

We brought Elana with us and the look on her face when she walked into the apartment was almost comical.
