Page 9 of Forced Allegiance

The second vehicle rammed into the driver’s side door, rendering the SUV unable to move.

“Go!” The man sitting next to me urged as we both moved toward the door.

I cautiously opened the door because this was the perfect moment for an ambush. This was when I would have guns aimed and ready to fire.

Bullets sprinkled the door and bounced in all directions.

It paid to be right.

Pulling back, I motioned the guys toward the trunk area. It wasn’t ideal for climbing through, but if we wanted to exit in an unexpected way, this was going to be our shot.

The bodyguard nodded as I took charge and pulled the seat down. The two others in the front seat had joined us.

They maneuvered around me to take the front position so that we would have cover to scramble to the right side of the other SUV.

As I climbed over the seat and out the back, I reached in my bag to palm my trusty best friend, a 9mm Sig Sauer in my right hand. It didn’t matter who was doing the shooting, I wasn’t going to die today. We could sort out who the bad guys were after the bullets stopped, but until then these men were with me and I would get them out of here.

The passengers in the SUV behind us started to shoot back, guiding a pathway to coverage. Without a second thought, I turned and fired three rapid shots before jumping and taking cover into the second SUV.

The driver of my vehicle was gritting his teeth and holding his shoulder; blood leaked and dripped down his arm. The wound wasn’t life threatening, but still it would need attention.

The car was in motion with no hesitation as quick turns were forcing us to slide around in the vehicle. “Um, Ms. Montrelli, I’m going to need the gun.” The man that had been sitting next to me held out his hand. “I’m Nick Rizzo,” he quirked his brow and looked at my hand, “and that was amazing, but the boss won’t like that you have one unless he says it’s okay.”

I opened my mouth to protest but remembered that they could still go get Carina to take my place if I were killed. It would be a waste since they’d managed to keep me alive this long, but I didn’t want to take any chances, not with my sister.

I gritted my teeth. “With protest.” I glared as I handed it to him.

“Noted.” He nodded at me and breathed a sigh of relief as he removed the bullets and took the one out of the chamber and put it in his pocket.

The guard that had been shot wasn’t looking too great and was sheet white pale, so I pulled off my outer shirt and bunched it up to press it against the wound as I laid his head in my lap.

“You’re gonna be fine.” I pushed down on the wound, forcing him to moan. “Where do you take those that are injured?” I demanded. While I might not be their boss, I still knew how to make those around me sit up and take notice. I always demanded respect even before I became an underboss, just because I was marrying the enemy didn’t mean I’d stop being who I was.

“We have a place, ma’am. I’ll get us there, he’ll be taken care of immediately,” Nick assured me as he leaned between the seats to give the new driver orders.

I gazed down into my lap. “What’s your name, soldier?” I asked as I checked to be sure that he wasn’t bleeding anywhere else.

“Tommy Rosalia, ma’am.” He panted, working hard to not show how affected he was by the bullet. In this world, when you were shot, one didn’t piss and moan.

“Well, Tommy, we’re going to get you somewhere that can take care of you. The bullet is still in there and that’s going to take surgery, but we gotta get it out. Just grit your teeth a little longer, and we’ll get you somewhere that can make the pain go away.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He smiled up at me, then the car jostled, slamming his wounded shoulder into the door. He took a deep inhale. “You’re a pretty good shot, ma’am. Took out at least three of those other guys for us.”

Nick eyed me curiously but grimaced before dialing.

“In this world, you do what needs to be done. Right, soldier?”

He smiles and takes some shallow breaths, “That’s right, ma’am.”

I kept pressure on the wound, as I listened to Nick’s side of the conversation. It was hard not to overhear what they were saying in such a small space, but I managed to keep my face void of emotion.

“Yes, sir. Tommy took quite a hit to the shoulder. It’s not a through and through, so he’s going to need treatment.” Nick shook his head a couple of times before muttering a few instructions to the driver who had been keeping to side streets in case there were more assassins chasing them.

With the three men that I’d taken out, there weren’t any to follow us. It had been a surprise attack which they wouldn’t try again because everyone was alert and ready for trouble.

Nick continued to give the new driver of my second vehicle in less than an hour, directions to a different part of town that was more secluded. While he kept feeding updates to the man in charge on the other line.

I’d never been out this way before and was surprised at how beautiful it truly was. But I made sure to keep track of my senses. I let my eyes wander and paid close attention to the sounds around me. Since I’d never been here before I didn’t know where to go or what would be available if I needed to defend myself again.
