"Trying to get you to answer the phone. You couldn't have answered once?" he asked with a finger in the air.

Everly folded her arms over her chest. Who did he think he was talking to her like she'd done something wrong? Screening calls was quite a bit less damaging than cheating.

"I don't want to talk to you. I don't have anything to say, and I'm not interested in your excuses."

"Come on. This is crazy! We’re supposed to get married."

Everly dropped her arms and lifted her chin. This boldness was new, and she wasn't sure if she liked it or not. She didn't like being mean, but this was one time when she needed to stand up for herself. It also helped that she didn't care if David was upset with her. He'd done the cheating, and she wasn't going to sit around playing the victim.

"Itiscrazy. Five years, David. I planned to give you so many more, and you did this to us."

"I said I'm sorry."

Everly shook her head, the fire in her anger dying. "I'm sorry, too, because I can't forget about this. I can forgive you, but I can't marry you."

David stared at her, and there was a moment of indecision in his brown eyes. He lifted his shoulders slowly, and the change in his stance had the hairs on the back of her neck standing on end.

His nostrils flared slightly, and his mouth straightened into a line. "Then get out."

The words hit her like a kick in the chest. "What?"

"I said get out." His words were sure and as steady as stone.

"I'm packing. You have to at least give me time to get my things." He did, didn't he?

"You could be reasonable, and we could make this work."

Everly huffed. "After you just tried to kick me out without letting me get my things? No thanks."

David had always been ambitious. When he set his mind on doing something, he always followed through. Too bad for him because she wasn’t going to just roll over and let it go so he could accomplish something he’d decided to do. Marriage wasn’t a to-do list item.

David threw his hands in the air. "I'm trying!" When he spread his arms wide, he looked twice as large, and that was saying something, since he’d been a tight end for Texas A&M before transitioning to a sports agent.

"Trying to make me do what you want?" There was a slight shake in her voice, and she swallowed to hide it.

"No. I'm trying to fix this."

Everly looked around. She didn't have a clue what to do. Speaking her mind was hard, and it was especially difficult when she didn't know what to do or say.

David leveled his gaze at her. "Work this out with me." His words were soft but sure, not leaving any room for argument.

Everly waited. There had to be another option because she didn't want to keep doing this.

"You can work this out with me and stay here," he said.

There was an unspoken ending to the sentence–a threat Everly didn’t want to imagine. She slowly shook her head and whispered, "I don't want to work it out, and I don't want to stay."

David huffed, and his whole face was turning red. "You can't be serious. You're going to throw away the last five years?"

"I think you did that, David." The words crushed her. He had thrown away their relationship, and he was blaming it on her.

"It was one time! You won't give me a second chance?"

"I'm pretty sure it was more than once." Everly trusted Megan, and if she'd seen them together before the gala where she got the photos, then Everly was confident that David had been with Natasha Franco before, and there may have been others, but she wasn't ready to make that accusation.

Maybe Megan was right. She needed proof. But that proof had been more than enough.

David turned his back to her, threading his hands in his hair. He could be frustrated with her, and for once, she wasn’t in the mood to do or say whatever it took to patch things up.
