Everly cleared her throat. “So, we should table this, until I move out?”

“Yes. The faster you could do that, the better.”

Smiling, Everly reached for her phone. “Well, good news. I made an offer on a house today.”

Blake’s hands slipped from her hair down to her shoulders. “Are you serious? When are you supposed to hear back from them?”

His excitement had her own bubbling back to the surface. “I don’t know. I’ve never bought a house before.”

“Let me see it. Is it close?”

Everly pulled up the site and flipped through the photos.

Blake let out a deep breath. “So you might be moving out really soon?”

Everly shrugged. “Hopefully.” She truly did hope it was soon because as much as she wanted to rebel against Blake’s logic, he had a point–one that she’d almost overlooked before tackling him with a big, complicating kiss.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Blake

Blake slid into the passenger’s seat of Ridge’s truck and slammed the door.

“Whoa. Who stepped on your puppy?” Ridge asked, leaning toward the truck door as if Blake might bite.

Bad days were rare in Blake’s world. He was the fun, upbeat guy, and his diminished attitude today had him trudging through work. For some reason, nothing had gone right today. “Let’s get home. I’m hungry.”

Ridge started the truck. “I think you mean hangry. What happened to your arm?”

“Yellow jackets.” Blake held up his arm that was unnaturally large and the color of a tomato. He’d rolled his sleeves up earlier, and the material was so tight around his upper arm that he might have to cut it off.

“Yikes.”

Blake rested his head back and closed his eyes. He’d laid it all out for Everly last night, and she’d basically told him she felt the same way about him. He’d fallen asleep on cloud nine and woken up in an episode ofThe Twilight Zone.

First, he’d slept through his alarm. Then, he’d fallen down the last half of the stairs on his way out, which woke Everly up before the sun on her day off. The rest of the day had gone just as well. He’d been chased by a chicken that Remi had let loose on the archery range, stepped in horse poop, been thrown off the same horse that did the pooping, and had the run-in with the yellow jackets.

Conclusion: this day was the worst. Thankfully, Ridge wasn’t the type to chat on the drive home, and Blake fell asleep as soon as they were on the road.

“Rise and shine!” Ridge said as he slapped a hand on Blake’s chest.

“I will cut you,” Blake growled in a sleepy daze.

“Someone is grumpy.”

“Sorry. Just tired.”

Blake stepped out of Ridge’s truck and held his arm close to his middle. The thing was swollen and red and the joint of his elbow didn’t want to move at all.

“Put some ice on it,” Ridge said as he walked inside the house.

“Your pity is appreciated,” Blake muttered. Normally, he’d use the situation to crack a joke or two. His arm looked like an overinflated balloon, which was funny. The throbbing pain was not.

“You’ll be fine. Everly will tend your wounds,” Ridge shouted over his shoulder as he headed straight to his room.

“Who needs enemies when I’ve got friends like you?” Blake hollered back.

Everly stumbled to her feet from where she’d been sitting on the couch in the living room. “What’s wrong?”
