"Coming up roses. How's the big city?"

Blake had known Rob Oakley since college, and they called to catch up about three times a year. Rob was in software development, but they’d bonded over sports in their first semester.

“The same. I’ll be seeing you soon.”

“You’re coming to Megan’s wedding? Dude, that’s great.”

“I have to see this ranch you can’t shut up about.”

Blake filled his cup and headed back to the porch. “It’s paradise.”

“Paradise that smells like hay and horses?” Rob joked.

“You get used to it. You have a plus one?”

“I’m actually bringing Renee Bolton. You remember her?”

“I introduced you to her. Are you together?”

“It’s new, but yeah. We made it official last month.”

“Congrats, man. I always knew the two of you were good for each other.”

Rob chuckled once. “Ha! I wish you’d let her in on that secret a few years earlier.”

Blake took his seat in a rocking chair and settled his cup on the arm rest. “Good things come to those who wait. Speaking of waiting, did I tell you I’m dating Everly Cooper now?”

“No way. How long?”

“Just a few weeks officially. We sort of started things up when she and David broke up a few months ago.”

“I heard about that. David can be a whack job on a good day. Glad she dodged that bullet.”

“Same.”

“Took you long enough. Megan said Everly is the wedding coordinator.”

“Yep. She’s awesome at it too. You should see her directing all of the vendors around before a wedding. It’s like watching Tom Brady when it’s third and two. Effortless.”

“Ridge still there too? How’s he doing?”

“Yep. Same as always. Wolf Creek suits him.”

“Good. I hated to see him go out the way he did, but it’s good to hear he’s hanging in there. I bet everyone asks for his autograph,” Rob said with a chuckle.

“It’s rare. He keeps out of the way, and hardly anyone bothers him.”

“That’s good. I’ll be flying in late the night before, so I might not get to see you until the wedding. Save us a seat?”

“You bet. Everly is the maid of honor, so I’ll be on my own for a little bit.”

“Renee will be happy to see her.”

Realization hit Blake in the chest. “How’s she doing? She still working at Baker and Brown?”

“Oh, yeah. She loves it. I bet you’re her favorite person since you got her the job.”

“I didn’t get her the job. I just introduced her to the right person. She did the hard work on her own.”
