“Can I have a few moments with my client?” Danica’s lawyer asks, interrupting Alex, who was on a roll listing all of Danica’s misdemeanors.

“Of course,” Alex agrees, “Kane, let’s give them a moment.”

Standing up, I follow her out of the room and down the corridor. “Holy shit,” I pant when we are out of sight. “You were amazing in there.”

“Just doing my job,” she nonchalantly replies.

“What do you think will happen next?”

“They’ll sign,” she confidently declares, leaving me shocked because I don’t feel the same way at all.

“How can you be so sure?”

“Her lawyer wants this over and done with. My investigators have discovered that MacLaine and Sons are close to dropping Danica as a client.”

“How—” She raises her hand to stop me.

“I know because I’m good at what I do, Kane. If she doesn’t sign today, we go to court and trust me, she doesn’t want that because she will get less than what’s currently on the table. Her lawyers know that, but she’s a deceitful, backstabbing, conniving wench and as it is, she doesn’t deserve what you’re offering her. You have offered her more than she deserves.”

“But—” She raises her hand again and stops me from continuing.

“She’s the mother of your children blah, blah, blah. Kane, and, yes, I’m aware I used your first name but that’s how serious I am. She’s no mother and from all accounts, she was a pretty shitty wife too. In the eyes of the law, she’s entitled to very little—”

“But—”

Alex shakes her head and gives me the eye, reaffirming to me why she’s the best at what she does. “Nope, no buts. I think you’re making a mistake offering her what you are, but you are being the nice, kindhearted soul that Holly described to me. You’re giving her more than she deserves but as your lawyer, I will follow your wishes.”

Leaning against the wall, I rub my beard like I do when I’m agitated, and shake my head as I think about how this is all playing out. This is typical Danica, how I ever fell in love with her amazes me but our love did produce three amazing children, so it wasn’t all that bad, except for the divorce part. When Danica and I said our vows, I meant the ‘til death do us part’ line and I hate that I’m in my forties and almost divorced.

“Let’s go,” Alex voices, snapping me back to the present. I was so far in my head; I didn’t see the other lawyer come out and get us. Nodding, I follow her back into the boardroom. We both take our seats. Alex sits up straight and commands the attention in the room—see, amazing at what she does. “So, have we made a decision?”

My eyes dart between the lawyer and Danica. I can’t read the expression on her face but then her lawyer utters four words, “We accept your terms.” They turn my frown upside down and inside my head, I’m doing a little dance.

Alex and the lawyer discuss what happens next. I zone out and sit here stunned that she finally accepted, I still don’t quite believe it. I was sure she’d draw this out to the courts. Dropping my gaze to my hands on the table, my eyes land on my wedding band. With my thumb, I mindlessly spin the ring around and around my finger.

Lifting my left hand, I remove the band and hold it up. Gripping it between my thumb and forefinger, I stare at it. Then I notice Danica staring across the table at me, standing next to her lawyer about to leave. With a flick of my wrist, I toss it over to her. “You can have this too; I have no need for it anymore.”

She reaches out and slips the ring into her handbag. She shoves her lawyer out of the way and storms out of the boardroom. Her lawyer nods his goodbye and follows after her.

Shaking my head, I start to grin. “You did it, Alex. You really fucking did it.”

“Did you doubt my ability, Kane?”

A laugh escapes me. “You? No. Her.” I head nod to the corridor. “Her, hell fucking yes. When we left just before, I was positive she was going to draw this out and take us before a judge.”

“To be honest, I thought that was how it was going to end up too. When he said, ‘we accept’ I nearly fell off my chair.”

“You and me both. So, what happens now?”

“I draw up the papers, then you both sign them and then we file them.”

“That easy?”

“As long as she signs them, yes.”

“One can hope it will be that easy.” I cross my fingers. “When will you have the papers? I fly back to Silverbell tomorrow afternoon.”

“I can make sure they’re done by lunchtime tomorrow, swing by here on your way to the airport.”
