“What?” I hiss, but she ignores me. Her wide eyes are locked on something behind me. The longer she stares, the more her nervous rash creeps up her neck and across her chest. The fact her nervous rash has appeared leaves me even more confused. Her eyes begin to move, indicating it’s a someONE and not a someTHING and they are on the move.

Silently, she watches them walk behind me. Her nails digging deeper and deeper into my skin. Slapping at her hands, I snap, “Kindly remove your talons from my arm.” But she still ignores me, she’s still focusing on the someone behind me.

Pinching her arm, I garner her attention and she looks down at where I nipped her and finally realizes what she’s doing. “Shit.” She releases her grip and proceeds to rub my arm soothingly while still mutely staring behind me.

Clearly, it’s a guy that has her all flustered because nothing flusters my bestie more than a guy, specifically a hot one. There’s no risk of me wanting him because we have completely different taste when it comes to the opposite sex, so I don’t bother to turn around.

Managing to pull my arm free, I rub at the nail indents before picking up my drink and taking a sip. “What caused you to go all grabby-grabby, stabby-stabby with your fingers just now?”

A look of contentment appears on her face and then she breathlessly pants a name, a name that I know all too well. “Mr. Heatherington.”

At the mention of his name, my heart begins to race. Putting my drink down, I anxiously run my palms up and down my thighs under the table. Kane Heatherington is the epitome of silver fox, but without the silver. He’s hot. H.O.Double T hot. I know hot only has one T, but that’s how smokin’ he is AND he’s the one and only man who we both agree is hot. Hell, even Raven thinks he’s hot … and he’s a dude.

“He’s coming this way,” she says under her breath.

Then I feel a presence behind me. Swiveling around in my seat, I come face-to-crotch with the man in question. Lifting my head, I run my eyes up his body and take in the Adonis before me. He can wear the hell out of a suit.

“Calliope. Fern,” he says in greeting, and the timbre of his voice vibrates through my body. I normally hate my full name but hearing those four syllables—Ca-li-o-pe—pass through his lips, I don’t mind at all. Hell, he could call me Sugartits Fartface and I’d be okay with it.

“Hi, Mr. Heatherington,” we both singsong like schoolgirls, which technically we still are. Fern, Raven, and I graduate next week from Silverbell Shore High. I’m off to the Big Apple, where I’m attending Fordham University to study marketing. I got early acceptance to complete my degree and I can’t wait to leave our sleepy lil’ town and live it up in the big city. Mom and Dad were so proud of me, as was I. Fern thinks it’s great because I’ve been accepted to FU. I sure am going to miss her and her crazy antics. She’s leaving me and heading off to California to pursue her dream of becoming a makeup artist for the movie stars, and Raven is off to Chicago, currently he’s undeclared but he has always wanted to live in Chicago because of deep dish pizzas and the Cubs. So come fall, the three of us will be scattered across the country.

“Congrats on your upcoming graduation, girls.”

“Thank you, Mr. Heatherington,” we both reply in unison. We both laugh at how in sync and school like our thank-you was.

“Calliope, I heard you got into Fordham. That’s no easy feat.”

“Thank you, Mr. Heatherington. It was tough but worth the effort.”

“Please, call me Kane, we’re all adults now. When you’re done at FU.” Fern giggles when he says FU. His lip lifts to laugh too but he schools it quickly, he is an adult after all. “Get in touch and I’ll be sure to create a position at The Clifton for you.”

“Thanks, Mr. H.” He smirks at my use of Mr. H and I internally high five myself making him react like that. “I’ll keep that in mind, but I want to get a job because I earned it, not cause the boss is best friends with my dad.”

He nods and smiles. “I admire that. Speaking of your dad, he must be so proud.”

“He is and I’m pretty proud too.”

“As you should be. I wish Michael had your determination and tenacity. Instead, he’s failing and likely never to graduate.”

“He’ll get there, Mr. H,” I tell him, and without thought I reach out and squeeze his hand. A spark ignites when my skin touches his, it vibrates up my arm and directly into my heart and down to my lady parts. My heartbeat is currently going wild and pulsating in sync with my clit. That’s never happened before.I’m ever so glad not to be attached to an electrocardiogram right now, my feelings would be given away by the loud beating sounds and there’d be little hearts on the screen in place of my actual heartbeat. “It’s been a rough few years for him.”

And rough is an understatement. Michael came home from school early one day to find his mom packing her things. Apparently, family life wasn’t her style and she needed to get away from them all. As if his mom walking out wasn’t enough, the following week, Nanna Heatherington—everyone in town called her this—died of a stroke. Michael and Konrad were the ones to find her. Nanna Heatherington’s death was a shock for the whole town, she was the sweetest old lady and was loved by everyone, even cranky Mr. Barber and he doesn’t like anyone. No one expected her to die suddenly like that, we all thought she’d live forever, especially Michael. They had a special bond, and with his mom and Nanna gone, he’s become lost.

“It has, I don’t disagree, but Konrad is managing fine.” He smiles brightly and then adds, “He starts med school in the fall.”

“I heard. Dr. Heatherington has a good ring to it. You mus—”

“You harassing my daughter?” Dad teases Kane as he joins us, interrupting my congratulations for Konrad. “Princess,” he greets me with a kiss to my head. “Fern.”

“Hi, Mr. Fischer,” Fern sweetly greets him before she reaches over and picks up my iced tea, taking a sip since she’s finished hers. I eye her but she just smiles and finishes what was left.

“Hi, Daddy,” I singsong.

I’m a total daddy’s girl and proud of it, but I’m so freakin’ excited to spread my wings away at college. I mean, I can’t remain a virgin forever, right? Sure, Raven has offered to pop my cherry for me, but he’s like my brother and that’s just too weird. I can wait a few more months for college to start and then I can find someone there to help me out.

“Keeping out of trouble?” he asks me, snapping my attention away from my virginity and to the present here at the country club.

“Always,” I sweetly reply.
