“You’re coming, right?”

He nods. “Yeah, I am, but I’m here early to check on Dad. To make sure he’s okay.”

Mr. H rolls his eyes. “I told you I’m fine.”

“What’s wrong?” I ask, my voice high-pitched and I worry that something is wrong with him. If Konrad is here and worried, then something must be amiss.

“Nothing,” Mr. H snaps, “I’m—”

“Nothing my ass, Dad,” Konrad growls. “You’ve been miserable for months now.” My eyes widen at that revelation. “None of us believe that you’re fine, but I had to see it for my own eyes, hence my early arrival.”

The overhead speakers crackle to life and the lady says which carousel the just arrived flight’s luggage can be collected from. Konrad slaps Mr. H on the back and walks over to collect his bag. I step toward him and when he looks at me, I notice sadness reflecting in his eyes.

“What’s going on, Mr. H? Are you really okay?”

“I’m fine, Calliope. My children are just overreacting.” I eye him suspiciously. “Really, I’m fine.”

Nodding, I open my mouth to tell him I’m here for him when my name is screeched from behind me. A smile graces my face and when I spin around, I see Fern running toward me. Without thought, I drop my bag and race toward her. She reaches out and pulls me in for a hug. “You’re here,” she coos into my ear.

“I’m here,” I reply, hugging her back harder than ever before.

Her body stiffens in my arms and she whispers, “Is he here for you?”

Shaking my head, I go to tell her no when she starts to nod. “Ohh, I see Konrad’s here.”

Nodding, I turn and see Mr. H and Konrad walking toward us. Mr. H has my bag in his hand.

“Fern Halstead,” Konrad purrs, yes, he purrs. “Looking good.”

My best friend blushes, she actually blushes. We will definitely be discussing this as soon as we get into her car, especially when she says his name back in a seductive manner. “Konrad Heatherington.” She then looks to Mr. H. “Kane.” It’s so weird hearing her call him Kane, but he is her boss and we aren’t kids anymore. “You must be happy to have your son home early for the weekend?”

“You knew?” he questions her.

“Maaaaybe,” she coyly replies with a shoulder shrug. “But we have to get going, Cali and I have big plans before the big party tomorrow night.”

Before we can say our goodbyes, she grabs my bag from Mr. H’s hand and takes my hand, dragging me away. “Later, fellas,” she throws over her shoulder and then she’s pulling me toward the exit.

“What? Why? Fern, have you lost your mind?”

“Maaaaybe,” she replies with a shrug. “But I had to get you out of there before you two started banging.”

“Please,” I scoff. “Mr. H and I will never bang. If he was turned off by a kiss, I can only imagine what he’d think if we, you know.”

“Fucked like rabbits?” she offers, clicking the button on her key fob, unlocking her car.

“You’re inner Raven is showing,” I tell her as I bend to climb into the passenger seat, but before I do, I look at her over the roof of her car. “And I freakin’ missed it.”

“I’ve missed you too.”

She starts the engine and backs out of her spot. “So, what’s new with you?”

“I’m seeing this guy, Tucker.”

“What happened to the other guy?”

“Francis?”

“No, Bobby?”
