Page 41 of Love Me Like You Do

“I’m already gorgeous,” Mom sasses just as Dad slides his arms around her waist.

“Hell yeah, you are.” He kisses her cheek and Mom’s smile widens.

“My parents are too cute,” I say to Fern just as we hear Mom and Dad agree to a ‘quickie’ before the evening’s festivities. “And on that note, Fern and I are going to go. We’ll see you both back here later.”

“After their quickie,” Fern mumbles under her breath, earning herself a jab in the ribs from me.

“Bye, girls,” Mom sings out, thankfully not hearing what Fern just said, she’d be mortified to know we heard her. “Thank you again for all your help, I couldn’t have done it without you.”

“Anytime, Mom.” Kissing my parents on the cheek, we say our goodbyes and then Fern and I quickly get out of here. Mom and Dad are being all lovey-dovey and gross, I don’t need to see that. And to add more unease to the situation, Fern starts singing, “Boom-chicca-wow-wow,” as we exit the country club.

“I hate you,” I say, play smacking her in the arm.

“No, you love me. Now let’s get home and make ourselves beautiful.”

A few hours later,I’m almost ready to go when there’s a knock at the door. “Can you get that?” Fern shouts out from her bedroom.

“Sure.” Dropping my shoes by the sofa, I answer the door and when I swing it open, I’m met with a huuuuuge bouquet of sunflowers. I smile because sunflowers are my favorite. I start to get excited that they are for me when they say, “Delivery for a Fern Halstead.”

“Ohh,” I mutter, sadness hits that they aren’t for me. “That’s my friend.”

“That’s good enough for me.” They hand me the flowers and walk away. Turning around, I head back upstairs and place them on the kitchen counter just as Fern walks out. Her eyes widen when she sees them and they widen farther when I say, “These are for you.”

She walks over, grabs the card, quickly reads it, and then throws the card into the trash.

“Everything okay?” I hesitantly ask.

“Fine,” she snaps. Before I can probe her on her delivery, she turns and walks back into her bedroom, slamming the door behind her. This reaction to flowers confirms my theory that she’s hiding something from me, but what? And right now, I feel like a shit friend because while I’m going through my drama, seems she too has something going on. From secret calls, random flower deliveries, and her wanting to make it work with every man she sleeps with, I’m guessing she too has man troubles. I wish we didn’t have to go tonight. I wish we could stay home and debrief, but then again, she won’t open up until she’s ready.

With a sigh, I drop to the sofa and slip my heels on. Standing up, I brush my hands down my dress when Fern walks out. My eyes widen when I see her. She’s changed into a different dress and she looks hot. H-O-T-T hot. “Fuck me, babe, you look hot.” She’s now wearing a simple, little black dress that stops just above her knees. It has a deep V in the front—hope she has tit tape in place—and a killer pair of sparkly heels.

“Ummm, says the hot one.” Since I’m standing, I do a spin, causing my blush pink dress to flair out at the bottom. “Kane is totally going to be sporting a woodie all night long when he sees you in this.”

“Doubt it,” I snap, still pissed he ditched me earlier.

“Who pissed in your Cheerios?”

“No one,” I screech, but we both know I’m full of shit. When I look over at her, the look on her face confirms my ‘full of shit’ analysis. “Fine,” I harrumph, “he canceled our date, catch-up, what-ever-the-fuck it was earlier, and it hurt. This morning at the beach it was perfect and then he cancels. Is he having second thoughts? Is he just another douche leading a girl on?”

“Why did he cancel?”

“He said something came up.”

“Yeah, his dick,” she teases. I roll my eyes. “Seriously, talk to him. Something probably did come up.”

“But—”

“Nope, no buts. Give him a chance to explain. From what I know, he has never done anything to lead you on. Maybe he got scared and that’s okay, I mean he wants to bang his bestie’s daughter, that’s big—pun intended—and entitles him to a freakout.”

Shaking my head, I smile at her because with one sentence, she makes me realize I’m overanalyzing this. I need to give him a chance to explain and if he has changed his mind, THEN I can wallow and pout. “Thank you for pulling me off the ledge. I just …”

“I know what you just want.” She winks at me. “Now let's get to this party so you can put your mind at ease and see your man.”

“It’s not like we can shout to the world that we are whatever we are. We agreed to keep it quiet.”

“You know that’s not going to end well, right? Secrets are always exposed.”
