“Noooo,” I scoff, “well, I don’t think so.”
“But you totally want to.”
“Well, yeah, but not here.”
“Pffft, I say, just go for it.”
Of course she would say that, but if I’m honest, I do want more than a few sneaky kisses with Kane, maybe even a spanking. Ever since that text, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about him doing that to me. Shaking away that sexy thought, I grab my clutch, kiss her cheek, and head to the restroom to freshen up.
After using the facilities, I wash my hands and slap some gloss on my lips. I’m reaching for the door handle when it swings open and I come face-to-face with Danica Heard. “Mrs. H, what are you doing here?”
“My invite to your parents’ party must have gotten lost in the mail,” she sneers.
“You’d have to take that up with them, I’m only home for the weekend.”
“Law, right?”
“No, marketing.”
“Why you want to study and work when you can just hook yourself a rich man, I will never know. A girl with your looks could sink her claws into any sap she bats her eyelashes at.”
WOW, what a vapid woman. No wonder Kane and the kids want nothing to do with her. “Oooookay, well, it was nice to see you.”
“You haven’t seen my husband, have you?”
My eyes widen at her question. “And why would I know where he is?”
“Because he’s your father’s best friend.”
“Exactly, my father. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a party to get back too.”
Stepping around her, I race to the room where I’m meeting Kane and when I step in, I’m relieved to see it’s empty. I need a few moments to compose myself. Of all people to run into, it had to be Bitchifer herself. I guess she was the something that came up today, also explains the aloofness of Michael earlier and Kane needing to spend time with the family.
I’m so lost in my head, I don’t hear him enter. He slides his hands around my waist and I scream in fright. I rear back and accidentally headbutt him. “Fuuuuck,” he groans, covering his nose.
“Shit, Kane, you scared me. Are you okay?”
“Mmmhmpf,” he utters from behind his cupped hands.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t hear you come in and then you scared the shit out of me when you touched me.”But you also set my body alight.
“And I felt the brunt of that scare.”
“Let me go grab some ice.” I go to step around him but he grips my wrist. He shakes his head. “No, I don’t need ice, Calliope, I just need this.” He lets go of my wrist, cups my cheeks, and presses his lips to mine. Our kiss starts out slow, our tongues languidly sliding in and out of each other’s mouths. Covering his hands with mine, I press myself into him, deepening our connection and kiss. Pulling apart, we rest out foreheads together, each of us breathing heavily from the intense make out session just now. “All better,” he whispers and I can’t help but laugh.
Pulling back, I lift my hand and gently rub his nose. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
Nodding, he smiles. “I promise but where were you when I entered? You were a million miles away.”
“I ran into Danica in the restrooms before I came here. I’m guessing she was the something that came up earlier today with the kids?”
He nods and I hate the sadness reflecting back at me. “Yeah, she really is a piece of work. The way she spoke to the kids today was unacceptable and then they wanted a family movie afternoon, and they will always come first.”
“Do not apologize, I understand. We’re still new. We’r—”
“You still want this after what happened?”
“Kane, I want you for you.” I place my hand over his heart. “For what’s in here. The love you have for your children is one of the many things that makes you amazing.”
