“Really?” I question, not quite believing she said yes.

“Yes,” she repeats, nodding and grinning at me. “Yes, I’ll marry you. You’re my everything too, Kane.” She takes a deep breath and shouts for those in the back to hear. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”

Jumping up, I grip her cheeks in my palms and kiss her, cementing our engagement. “I don’t have a ring,” I mumble against her lips.

“I don’t need a ring. I just need you.”

“This is the best birthday present ever. Thank you for loving me.”

“No,” she cries, “thank you for loving me like you do.”

ChapterForty-Four

… almost a year later

Today is my wedding day.

Today I marry the man I’ve had a crush on since I was a little girl.

Today I marry my dad’s best friend.

Today I’m the bride and all eyes will be on me—cringe.

But most of all, today I marry my best friend. My lover. My everything.

All my worries about Kane and I being an us were for nothing. Sure, most people were shocked and only two punches were ever thrown—thankfully—but it goes to show just how strong Dad and Kane’s friendship is because it was strong enough to survive his best friend falling for his princess.

“My God, Princess,” Dad says from behind me, “you look beautiful. When did my baby girl grow up?”

“Thanks, Dad,” I reply, turning to face him. “You look pretty spiffy too.”

“I hate wearing monkey suits, but seeing you like this makes the uncomfortableness worth it. Just know, anytime you want to make a run for it, you give me the signal and I’ll whisk you away. No questions asked.”

“Appreciate that, Dad, but I want this with every fiber of my being. My heart beats for him and only him.”

“That’s beautiful, Princess, but did it have to be with my best friend?”

Shrugging at him, I walk over to the sofa in the room and sit down, my dress poofs around me, cocooning me in Swarovski-crystal-covered lace. My butt has just hit the cushion when there’s a knock on the suite door. Dad answers it as he’s closer, plus I just sat down.

“Delivery for a Calliope soon-to-be Heatherington.”

“Thanks,” Dad tersely says to the delivery boy. He shoves the box at Daddy and runs away.

“You just caused that kid to shit his pants.”

“I didn’t like the way he was looking at you.”

“Dad, you don’t like the way any male looks at me. You elbow my fiancé anytime he looks my way.”

“I’m your dad, it’s my prerogative. When you have kids, you’ll see.”

“Dad, you know you won’t be getting any from me. Kane and I have repeatedly said, no kids for us.”

“You sure about that, Princess? The bond with a child is the most amazing thing in the world. I’d hate to see you miss out on what I have with you and your sister. You two are my best creations and I want that for you.”

“I’m sure, besides, I have Konrad, Michael, and Finley.” And that’s true, those three people mean everything to me and they treat me with respect and love … even if Konrad is older than me. “I know they aren’t mine biologically, and after today I’m technically their mom, but I care for them in a different way now. I can’t explain how it changed or when it did, but my love for Kane flows through to them.”

“I think I understand but I have to admit, there’s a part of me that’s sad I won’t get to be a grandaddy to your kids.”
