“You’re still not talking to me?” I asked, studying her profile while she drove. It had grown dark while we were at the hospital, and now the streetlights cast her in a glow as we passed under them.

“I’m talking to you.”

“You know what I mean. Yeah, we discussed the new dinosaur movie—that your were supposed to see with me, by the way. We talked about finding my missing sister and how she’s hooking up with one of the lifeguards. We even chatted about that pretty pink color on your toes. But you won’t talk to me about what’s important.”

She stiffened, her fingers visibly tightening on the steering wheel. “We don’t have anything to talk about.”

“We haveeverythingto talk about. Damn it, Breezy! I love you and you love me!”

“But I wasn’t enough for you!” she retorted.

“You know you were—you are!” I yelled back. Frustrated, I scrubbed my hand over my face and lowered my tone. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to shout.”

Huffing a sigh, I stared out the window and watched the familiar businesses pass in the moments before she turned into the lot of my building.

She pulled to the curb and didn’t turn off the engine or even take the Jeep out of gear as she stared straight ahead.

“Breezy,” I pleaded.

“I can’t, Felix. Okay. I can’t.”

She couldn’twhat?

“No. Not okay,” I argued. “Look at me. You know I can’t lie to you. You can tell. I might as well write it in permanent marker across my skin. Look at me. Please.”

She didn’t. Not for a long moment. I never prayed so hard for a miracle as I did then.

Her lips rolled in as she bit them and her eyes closed as her head dropped forward. The movement jerky, she shoved the truck into park.

“You…you hurt me.”

“Not on purpose. I never would.”

After another sigh, she side-eyed me.

I needed more. “Really look at me. I don’t want any mistakes or more misunderstandings, Bree.”

Turning, she pressed her back to the door and crossed her arms. Her brow lifted.

I wasn’t sure what her challenge was. I only had the truth for her.

“I. Didn’t. Cheat. On you. I didn’t. Ididn’tcheat,” I asserted slowly, clearly articulating every word while never letting my eyes shift from hers—even if I really had missed every damn curve of her perfect, lithe body.

“Then what were you doing with her?”

Fuck.

“I can’t tell you.”

Her lips pursing in fury, she turned back to the wheel. I grabbed her wrist before she could put the vehicle back into gear.

“Get out,” she demanded.

“Damn it! Will you fucking listen to me!” I couldn’t believe we were like this. We never ever argued. Not until that day six months ago. Until then we’d always been like two perfectly oiled cogs working in perfect unison with each other.

“What? You’re still lying to me.”

“I’m not.” I pulled at my hair, my face pinching at my fury.
