“I’m not going to hurt you,” his chest vibrated around the words. This time they sank in, his hands tightening around me. I lifted my chin to find his gaze lidded, his lips parted as he stared at mine. His entire attention pinned me and I wanted to believe him. Something aching inside me died to know that his words were honest and the gorgeous, brutal man in front of me wasn’t interested in my pain. His hand brushed a lock of hair behind my shoulder, the touch sending chills down my sweaty back. I only wanted him interested in my pleasure.

“I couldn’t,” he rasped. “I couldn’t hurt you.” His lips were only a breath away from mine and his eyes flashed, like a teasing question.Do you want this?

My body swayed forward on its own and Yuri didn’t hesitate.

I whimpered when his mouth crushed against mine, the heat of his lips all-consuming. I’d stared at those perfect full lips, watched the curve of them as they formed my name, but nothing could have prepared me for their sweetness. He was dripping with it. But there was nothing sweet about the kiss.

His fingers squeezed on the back of my neck and kept me firm against him, even as my fists pushed against his chest. It was a push-pull game that we both understood. It was too soon to admit the fiery desire that swirled low in my belly or the way my thighs pressed together to relieve the painful emptiness– but Yuri was intent to devour me anyways. He turned my head to deepen our kiss. His scorching tongue pushed for entry and I gasped, giving him the chance to enter. Whether or not I wanted his tongue to flick across mine, I wasn’t sure— but I melted against him either way. My fingers curled against his shirt, pulling him closer while we shared breaths.

Every inch of my skin was alive against him. Like his kiss was the electricity that kept my heart beating. I met his tongue greedily, this time entering into his delicious mouth, needing more of everything he could give me. I was addicted to the feeling of him.

When he finally pulled away, my eyes refused to open and I panted against him.

The current running through me kept my fingers tightly woven in his shirt as the beat of my swollen lips kept with my pulse. I somehow gathered the courage to open my eyes, looking up to see the man responsible for my sinful arousal. He looked hungry. His grip tightened on the back of my neck and I sucked in my bottom lip, reveling in the sensitivity of it. With a groan, he peeled us apart and it was almost painful.

“God, I’ve been wanting to do that since the moment I laid eyes on you,” he shook his head. I was still breathless and his words kept me that way.

A shout from behind us made me jump and Yuri responded to his men in Spanish. My fingers lifted to my lips and I couldn’t stop myself from touching them, feeling the electricity still firing.

“Cariño, don’t run from me again.”

“I don’t trust you,” I blurted out. I wasn’t naive enough to forget who he was or why I was standing in front of him. Fiery chemistry or not, I was the means to an end for him and no one else was going to prioritize my own safety more than myself. He claimed he couldn’t hurt me. I’d need proof.

He nodded as if he read my thoughts.

“But, I won’t run.”

Taking my arm, he led us back to the house. His men stood waiting for us in a line, each one dressed in all black with wraps covering their faces. Not a single one looked in my direction and after a few words from their boss, they scattered, giving us a straight shot back to the window I had clawed my way out of. The gray sheet hanging over the window whipped in the wind and I felt my fear growing at the prospect of going back inside.

I hadn’t gained my freedom but I’d been closer to it. I wasn’t ready to be buried underground again.

As we stepped closer, he held out a hand to stop me.

“Come here.” He bent and laced his arms around me, pulling me into his chest and stepping toward the window. Confusion flooded through me until I heard the crunch of glass under his boots. He lifted me over the window sill and set me down softly onto the carpet before hurdling in behind me. The scene was familiar. It was the second time he had protected my bare feet from broken shards on the ground. He was starting to prove it already.

He nodded to the bathroom. “Unless you’re still set on depriving yourself of basic needs, go shower. I need to clean this up.”

I shook my head and walked to the bathroom, gripping the door as I looked back. He was already pulling the sheet inside and using it to pick up the larger pieces of glass. My chest tightened and I opened my mouth to speak when he cut the silence.

“I won’t look,” he smirked. “Unless you want me to, of course.”

Feeling the familiar rage, I slammed the door shut and clicked the lock, shaking it to be sure there was no way that Yuri was getting in. Unless he broke down the door.

The water roared to life and the steam filled the air while I pulled out a towel. One inside, I took my sweet time. Lathering, rinsing and repeating until my skin began to feel uncomfortable but I didn’t care. The dirt and grime of nearly a weak clung to my skin and who knew when my next opportunity to shower would be? Satisfied that I was sufficiently clean, I sat under the stream in a meditative state, letting the warmth cascade across me. I stayed in the shower until I heard a soft knock at the door, I jumped and peeked out of the curtain.

“I’m leaving clean clothes by the door.” Yuri’s voice was low. I smiled to myself before shutting off the water and reaching for the towel.

After shimmying around the door to make sure that he couldn’t see me through the crack, I dressed and rang my fingers through my wet hair, the ends leaving little droplets on the dark gray shirt. When I pushed the door open, the room was dark, the window covered with a plank of wood.

“I like how you look in my clothes,” he rasped. Heat flushed across my cheeks but I hoped he wouldn’t be able to tell after scrubbing my skin so furiously.

I looked down at the fresh set. “Thank you, by the way.”

“You wouldn’t thank me if you knew exactly what I wanted to do to you right now.” His fingers curled to follow him. “Let’s go.”

I knew he meant to take me to my cell, but his last comment still hung heavy in the air.

“Stay by me, don’t make a sound.” He opened the door and pulled me along behind him until we entered the guest room we had dipped in earlier.
