I sidestepped and let him in. “How’s Luka? Is he okay?” I asked, abruptly feeling breathless.

He put the tray down on the edge of the bed, but my eyes burned into his, searching for answers.

“He will be fine.”

I sucked in a breath like I hadn’t truly breathed since seeing him bloody and unconscious yesterday. “Thank God,” I said under my breath. Something about the idea of Luka in danger ripped at my heart. Was I worried for him? For Lucia? For Yuri?

Why did I care at all?

“You should eat.”

“Where’s Yuri?” I bit my lip as Matteo averted his gaze and headed toward the door. “Where is he?” I followed him, realizing my voice was bordering on begging.

Matteo didn’t look back. He opened the door and shut it behind him, securing a lock from the outside.

I’d only upgraded my prison quarters.

???

I became very acquainted with the sound of Matteo’s knock at the door. He brought food twice a day– the only thing I had to measure the time in Yuri’s room.

He never once came in to see me, to check on me, nothing, for three days.

On the fourth day, I had no more tears left. My hand had a gnarly scab that was still incredibly tender, and the room was spotless. Cleaning had helped pass the time– I’d started with the blood stains on the bathroom floor and worked my way through the whole room.

Eventually, I got sick of his scent and decided to sleep in the corner. It was more befitting of a captive anyways.

And that’s all I was. He’d made it abundantly clear.

When I heard clanking against the door, I lifted my head off my knees but stayed seated with my back against the wall. It was probably Matteo again and there was no use getting my hopes up anymore.

When Yuri stepped inside, my traitorous heart fluttered at the sight of him, and then every muscle in my body tensed.

He looked disheveled and when he didn’t immediately see me in bed, his eyes darted to the bathroom. A worried look passed over his face as he searched for me there but didn’t find me. When he turned, our eyes locked, and his shoulders dropped.

“How is Luka?” My voice was shaky and groggy– as if I hadn’t spoken in three days.

Yuri’s head dropped slightly at the question. “He is doing much better.”

“I’m glad,” I said and let my head drop back down to my knees. I didn’t want to look at him anymore because the sight of him brought back all the stupid feelings that got me into this situation in the first place. He was too easy on the eyes— the thought had me wondering just how many stupid girls like me had fallen for those dark eyes and that deep voice.

“Did you clean up in here?”

I scoffed. “Well, what the hell else was I going to do all day?”

I heard his footsteps getting closer, but I didn’t budge.

“Darya?” He asked. I felt his finger touch the back of my injured hand and I jerked away.

“Don’t touch me.”

He lowered before me. “I need to check your hand.”

“It’s fine. Leave me alone.”

His jaw clenched but he backed off. Relief flooded me as I clung to the last of my strength. I wanted him to think I was so mad I could barely look at him. In reality, I was seconds away from losing it.

He went to the bathroom and closed the door behind him, the water turning on seconds later. Was this how it was going to be? God, he had barely even looked at me since taking my virginity. I didn’t expect him to profess his love for me after one night together but damn, I sure as hell didn’t expect him to give me the cold shoulder. When he emerged again, steam erupted from behind the door, and he was only dressed in a towel. I closed my eyes to stop them from wandering and hated the way my belly fluttered. He rifled through his drawers for clean clothes and dressed quickly.
