We slipped through the darkness and Yuri hoisted me in front of him. His free hand wrapped uncomfortably tight around my waist while the other pressed the gun against my throat.

“Come out, come out,” he taunted.

A door opened and my knees went weak, my body held up only by Yuri’s painful hold.

“Don't shoot.” My father's voice shook as he stepped out with his hands raised in the air. “Oh, my God,” he cried out from seeing me at gunpoint.

Yuri snapped. “Follow Me.”

And he did exactly as he was told, following us back through the hallway in search of the living room, all according to plan.

“Darya, what have they done to you?” His eyes widened when he noticed the bruises on my neck. I'm sure I looked like hell.

Why did he even care? He should have known exactly what I was in for, exactly what situation he left me in. My mouth dropped open to fire back, but Yuri’s hand snaked through my hair and ripped me backward. I winced as pain flashed across my scalp.

“Sit down,” Yuri ordered. He turned me slightly, and his eyes flared.

Right. I needed to play the part.

At Yuri’s command, my father made his way to an oversized sofa chair and lowered himself slowly, his eyes still wide with fear. “I have money.”

“I know you do. Did I want your money in the first place?” Yuri leaned forward until my father's shoulders dropped. “If I wanted your fucking money, I would have asked for it.”

I whimpered in his painful hold, and he chuckled. The vibrations rippled through me.

“But no, I gave you simple instructions.” His fingers tightened in my hair until tears blurred my vision. The gun poked into my side and dug into the skin of my waist, the presence of it was all my father could focus on. “Repeat them to me.”

“What?”

“Repeat. Those. Instructions. I want to make sure you understand just how you fucked us over.”

My father stuttered.

“Say it!” Yuri yelled.

“I was supposed to lift the search ban and I did that.”

“Keep going,” Yuri urged.

My father wrung his hands in his lap, “I put those men that you sent over in place. I made them guards. I did what you asked.”

“Dad,” I whimpered as Yuri shook me.

“What was the third?”

He averted his eyes as if Yuri had pressed a button— hit a nerve.

“Go on. Which of my requests were just a little too difficult to obey?”

“Dad,” I begged again. I wanted him to say it too. I wanted him to admit he couldn’t risk his own reputation. Couldn’t risk the life he’d pushed me out of. I cried out when Yuri kicked my legs out from under me and I sank to my knees in front of him.

“You hear this? Your little girl,” he brushed away a lock of my hair with the gun. It trailed across my skin until he used it to part my lips and put the tip of it into my mouth. My eyes widened at the invasion. The metallic taste hit my tongue and a hot tear broke free, streaking down my cheek as I squeezed my eyes shut. “Did you think she was going to be okay? That we were gonna let her off easy because she's a pretty little thing?”

“Darya!” My father lifted off the chair like he wanted to help me.

Yuri clicked his tongue. “Not so fast. What was my third request?”

He pushed the gun further until I gagged, and my father finally gave in.
