Chapter One

Kayne

She’s coming toward me. My princess. My soon-to-be wife. I flex my hands, burning to touch her. To put her on her knees before me, with my cock in her mouth while I tell her she’s mine. Only mine. Until my last breath.

She’s ethereal. Stunning and pure. Her smile brightens my whole universe. Her body makes me burn to touch her, everywhere, endlessly. She makes me feel whole, complete, a guilty pleasure never meant for someone like me.

She touches me and my dark soul opens up.

I wanted to do the right thing and leave her to be the queen of her country, a throne that belongs to her, one she is powerful enough to rule over.

But I’m a selfish bastard. I took her virginity. Her ass, her pussy and her mouth, all belong to me. She can rule her kingdom, but no other man is going to touch her.

Then she defied my rule. And came to my apartment to tear down the last of my walls. Now I want to make her my wife. I want to take her over and over again until she’s carrying my child and I don’t fucking care I’m not the right man for her.

She knew that. She knew the instant she came back to me. She decided that she was going to be mine. Forever. For eternity.

She drops her coat; it slides off her shoulders and drapes the floor of my apartment.

Her dress beneath the coat is smart, elegant, and conservative. But I know what lies underneath her clothes. I marked her with my hands, my teeth, my lips, my cock, every inch of her skin, every curve of her beauty.

She’s so close I can reach out and grab her, smell her scent, crush her body to mine. But I see the split second of fear in her eye. I realize it’s because she’s reacting to the look in mine.

I feel the air get sucked out of my apartment. A blanket of eerie silence, so infinitesimal, only someone as trained as I am would have felt it.

The floor beneath her feet cracks. Everything seems to stand still around me. There’s only my princess flung into the air as if in slow motion before I can reach her.

Her lips form a name. Mine. That’s the last thing she says but her eyes fill with confusion and fear. Shards of glass and concrete rain down around her. Swallowing her into a tornado of debris.

My lungs feel as if they’re collapsing as I wade through the shell-shocked layers of my brain to get to her. My eardrums explode and then there’s only the deafening sound of garbled silence as if I’m drowning.

I reach for her as another shock wave hits, rippling through me.

I grab her and cover her body with mine. Every inch of her is protected by me. My brain already understands that any movement I make, any attempt to get her out of there might prove futile. The explosions are set to go off strategically to a beat I’m not yet privy to. Like land mines.

Her body is so small underneath mine. I’m careful not to crush her with my weight, but protecting her from the falling slabs of concrete, of glass slamming into my body, is my first priority.

My princess. My Sophia…

My eyes flicker open and grit stabs at my pupils.

Anxiety, an emotion I haven’t felt since I was twelve years old rips through me.

I roll myself off what feels like a slab of damp concrete. But I’m pulled back by a metal cuff on my left wrist, chained to the wall. My back hurts as I hit the stone and I grimace, my body already bruised and battered.

Sophia?

The unease creeping under my skin through my veins ruptures.

Where is Sophia?

I strain to remember. My brain is encompassed in thick fog but I search relentlessly for her smile. Her presence. Then I find her.

Sophia comes toward me as she shrugs her coat off. The red fabric tattered, sucked into the chaos then buried in the debris. My insides turn.

I can still feel her in my arms. I flex my hands, I can still remember me holding her. Her body covered with mine. Her heart beating against me as a symphony of explosions detonates around us. Not enough to kill us, my brain registers.

Until the point of a needle pierces my neck, tampering with my consciousness enough that she slips through my fingers, taken from me before I can snatch her back. My body too fucking weak to withstand the horse tranquilizer someone pumped into me, my brain too jolted to find purchase.
