I had managed to go a few days without seeing Evie for more than a few minutes here and there, not the lingering observation I wanted to do, just to see her move. It was getting painful to breathe with the distance between us. I knew I’d cave and watch her soon. I couldn’t stop checking on her, and I would move silently across the rooftops every few hours to make sure she was okay before moving on to help someone else. But I wanted to stay, even though she couldn’t see me, even though she didn’t know I was there. I wanted to stay and watch her for hours.
But how many more times must I be reminded of Evie? Of what she had awakened in me. Of the fact that no one, no matter how my body responded, made me want to cross that line again.
Except her.
I’d do it again with Evie.
Over and over again, I would tie her to my bed and take her until we fell into an exhausted pile and the inside of her thighs were sticky and wet with sweat and cum.
The admission frightened me, made me realize I was compromised, and perhaps I was no longer worthy of doing the good work here on Earth. Because if I had succumbed to my desires once, and IknewI’d do it again, given a chance.

This time I asked who it was before I answered the pounding on the door.

The door frame splintered as he used a well-aimed kick to break the lock free of its flimsy hold on my safety, and I backed away as quickly as he approached me, his hands balled into fists at his sides. But I wasn’t quick enough, and where would I have gone anyway? I was at the window, my back pressed against the cool glass when he reached me, his fist tangling into my hair as he pulled me up until my face was level with his.
Pure rage.
“Evie.” His voice was silky smooth, a terrifying contrast to the flare in his eyes and twitch of his fingers as he twisted my hair further into his fist. “Where you have you been, sweet girl? You left without even saying goodbye.” I swallowed heavily against the bile rising in my throat as he continued, “Well, imagine my surprise when I went to find you, ready to tell you to stop turning down jobs, and your apartment was empty. I’ll admit, I admire the guts it must have taken for you to leave.” He licked his lips. “That bravery will come in handy when it comes to your punishment.”
His thumb ran across my bottom lip as it started to tremble, and my back stiffened as he pressed his lips to mine, not moving as he kissed me, softly, delicately, before returning his thumb to my chin.
“Tyson,” I gasped out. I had no idea what I was going to say anyway.
“I can’t lose another girl so soon. It’ll cut into my profits.”
Something clicked in my mind, and I muttered, “Heidi?”
I had been trying to call her for days, but she never answered. The phone would ring out and leave me no option to leave a message, not that I would anyway. It had occurred to me Tyson had her phone, but even texts went unanswered, and if he did have her phone, a text would’ve been the perfect opportunity for him to pretend to be her to try and lure me out. But there was no answer from her, nothing. She was off the grid.
He smiled, and a shiver ran up my spine.
“Paul wasn’t happy that Heidi was withheld from him. Not happy at all.”
“What did you do?” I croaked.
“I gave her to him. He offered to pay triple, so how could I refuse?”
My stomach sank. He had killed her. I just knew he had. I thought I was going to be sick.
“Where is she?” I barely managed to get the words out without vomiting.
“I had to let her go. She’s not dead,” he added at the look on my face, “But Paul, he uh…” his hesitation wasn’t through any guilt or sorrow, but the glee he was taking in watching my reaction as he dribbled out information, a threat in itself. “He broke her face. Now no one wants her.”
