Not that he looked particularly good before, although I may have had a skewed vision of him and judged him by his involvement in Evie’s kidnap and abuse. Evil deeds tended to warp someone’s physical appearance. Someone could be attractive, then when you saw their true colors, suddenly they were not.

Like Candy.

Whether Lee was actively involved in Tyson’s acts or not, he stood by while Evie and others were treated as they were and did nothing.

Now, his eyes held that manic look of someone on the edge, and his hand that held the gun now pointed at my chest, was trembling. His clothes were filthy as though he hadn’t washed in days or weeks, and his hair was unkempt.

He looked unbalanced.

“You!” He managed to push out through gritted teeth. “I knew you would come if they called Evie, guardian angel.”

“What do you want?”

“You, I want you.”

The rage was bubbling inside me again, a feeling I was becoming all too familiar with now. Something I had been able to keep mostly under control until I had someone to care for, something to lose.

“You didallof this…” I indicated to his hostages cowering on the ground, “… just to get to me?”

He laughed a maniacal, unsettling sound that reaffirmed my suspicions he was on the edge.

“Ooh,” he cooed. “You were bound to come running, weren’t you? Come flying in to protect these whores, just like you did Evie.”

“What do you want?”

“Youfucked me up,dude! How am I supposed to know what to do with myself now that I know what I know? Now that I know you exist?”

“Do what I told you to do…help people.”

He laughed again. “Fuck that for a joke. I’ll sleep better at night if you aren’t around.”

I let my expression darken, tilting my head down and allowing the white to take over my eyes. “I don’t want you to sleep better at night.”

“Zaqiel…” Evie whispered, the urgency clear in her voice. “We need to get him out of here. He could hurt someone.”

She was right, of course.

“Lee,” I started, noticing his unpleasant expression when I used his name. I pulled a face too. I didn’t like talking to him any more than he liked being talked to by me. “Why don’t we take this outside?”

“I ain’t going anywhere with you without some collateral.”

He searched around and was about to reach down and grab one of the girls when Evie screamed, “Stop!”

Lee stared at her, his hand stretched and inches from the top of the head of the girl nearest him, who had begun to tremble visibly.

“Take me.”

“Evie, no. What are you doing?” She wrenched against the grip I took on her arm, but I wouldn’t let her go.

I couldn’t let her go.

“Zaqiel…” she whispered. “I have to help them.Wehave to help them.”

Lee was crossing the bar, stepping over the bodies of his hostages still lying face down on the ground. He stopped two feet away at the look he got from me.

They had heard it.

“The cops are coming,” I said to Lee. “We better get out of here before this gets real messy.”
