Shrugging, Kit took another bite of cake. “It was too… big, I guess. And I figured he was only saying it because he was injured and he needed me. I didn’t think he really meant it, and I knew if I said it, I would mean it. Possibly too much.”

“Did you tell himthat?”

“Eventually,” Kit admitted with a sheepish smile. “He wasn’t too thrilled.”

“Girl. You do enjoy living dangerously.”

“I don’t know about that. I was just so freaked out, you know? What I feel for him, it’s so impossibly huge and important, it didn’t seem possible he could feel the same way about me. It still doesn’t, if I’m being honest.”

“I get that, actually.” At Kit’s raised eyebrow, Claudia lifted a shoulder. “Just because Tony and I knew each other forever before we got together didn’t make it any less terrifying. But the good things in life are usually scary, right? Because it matters.”

“I guess that’s true.”

“Of course, it’s true, I said it.” Claudia grinned. “So you said it back, eventually. How did that go down? Was it super romantic?”

Her entire body flushed at the memory of her on her knees, her lady bits on fire as he tortured the confession and a mind-blowing orgasm out of her. “I’m going to need something a hell of a long stronger than coffee for that story.”

Austin

“Couldyou repeat that for me, doc?” Sitting on the examination table, Austin knew he was staring, but he still couldn’t quite process what he’d just been told.

“Barring any unforeseen complications, I don’t see any reason you can’t play next year.”

“And no surgery?”

“No surgery. The knee is healing up quite nicely on its own and the physical therapist says you’ve made a lot of improvement the past few weeks. You’re not quite ready to go back to practice, but we’re very happy with your progress.”

“That’s—wow. Holy shit.” His face felt like it might split open from smiling. “That’s the second-best news I’ve heard since this happened.”

“Happy to be of service. Keep the brace on, even when you’re resting. You’ll probably need another two months with it on to fully heal, but we’ll reevaluate in a couple weeks.”

The entire car ride home, he couldn’t wipe the grin from his face. He’d kept the appointment a secret from Kit—which had been something of a miracle—so he’d have time to process the news on his own if it had gone the other way. Now, he couldn’t wait to get home to her and share the good news with her.

A quick text confirmed she was still out with Claudia, which worked in his favor. He wanted to celebrate, and the beginnings of a plan stirred in his mind.

Remember the dress you wore to Black Light?

Three dots popped up on the screen for several long seconds and he chuckled as he imagined her blushing in the coffee shop, carefully wording her answer before she replied.

The red one? Yes, sir.

That’s the one. I want you to go to your place and get ready for dinner. Wear the dress. I’ll pick you up around six.

You don’t want me to come home?

Not yet.

Why?

He raised an eyebrow before he remembered she couldn’t see it.Do you need to know why, little girl?

Grrr. I really hate that rule!

I know. See you at six, kitten.

The wait sucked, but he killed a good bit of time getting himself a shower and shaving for the first time since the accident. By the time the car he’d ordered pulled up in front of her house, his entire body was thrumming with anticipation.
