She shrugged.

“Only what I put on for tonight.”

He frowned. “So, if I pull out a bull whip, you’re cool with that?”

She blanched.

“I’d really rather you didn’t. But I don’t see one on the table, so I’m fairly certain I’m safe.” She gave him a wobbly smile.

“Submission doesn’t mean you just let anyone do whatever they want to you,” he said firmly.

“I know that,” she snapped, defensive.

“Really? Because you just said you’d rather I didn’t, but wouldn’t stop me? You said you don’t want to play with a dragon’s tail again, but you don’t put it on your limits list.”

She raised her chin. “I came here tonight to try new things—to get a feel for what I can do, what I should do. If you do something I really don’t like, I’ll safe word.” She paused. “Yellow. I’ll say yellow. I won’t say red unless it’s really, really bad. I don’t want to cost you a free month.”

He studied her, the tension in her body, the fierceness of her eyes.

“You need a list of things you don’t want done to you,” he said, then lightly pushed her chest until she was pressed against the cross. “Arms up.”

She lifted her wrists toward the rings situated on the cross. Her petite frame kept her from reaching them, but the boy scout in him was prepared. He snapped two clip hooks together, then used the chain to tether each wrist to the cross.

He brushed her hair over her shoulders, then caught her chin in his hand.

“I don’t give a fuck about the free month. If you need to call red, you call red.”

Her eyes softened beneath the strength of his tone. He wasn’t messing around. He wouldn’t lay a finger on her if she couldn’t bring herself to safe word for her own safety.

“Okay,” she whispered.

“If you don’t safe word—yellow or red—when you need to, I will punish you, Sandra. And not a little spanking or time out. A true punishment that will make you think twice about not being safe ever again.”

“I understand, James. I promise. If it gets to be too much, I’ll use my safe words.”

He believed her, but kept his eyes fixed on hers for another long pause.

“I trust you.” He let go of her chin and reached over to the table to grab the first item he wanted.

Her eyes widened as he brought the clamps into her view.

“Can you trust me?”
