“You look very sexy tonight,” Devon says, tossing a bar towel onto the counter.

“You just love a man in uniform.” I head behind the bar and wrap her up in my arms.

“True.” She shrugs, and I kiss the bridge of her nose. “You don’thaveto wear it every Saturday night, you know. You could go home and change.”

“And miss intimidating any lowlife who even thinks about pulling some stupid shit? I don’t think so, baby.” I move my hands down her waist, over her curvy round ass. “Besides, I know why you wouldn’t want that.”

She narrows her eyes at me, giving me an instant hard on. “Because I like it when you fuck me with it on.”

“Dirty girl.” I bury my face in her neck and she giggles when my beard tickles her sensitive skin.

It didn’t take long for us to get married. Three months of dating and we decided we wanted to tie the knot. Why waste time? As silly as it sounds, one bonus is that I have an amazing insurance plan. I need to keep my woman safeandhealthy. Not the most romantic thing in the world, but I don’t care. It was a secondary reason; The first was that Devon was already pregnant.

“I don’t want to rush you,Officer.”She teases. “But we do have a babysitter that needs to be relieved, so maybe you could…?” She wags her thumb toward the back room, where there’s a sofa big enough for two.

“My sister’s fine, Dev.” I tilt her chin upward so I can gaze into her eyes. “She doesn’t care if we’re a little late.”

“In that case.” She stands on her tiptoes and presses her lips against mine. I rub her over her jeans, feeling powerful as she melts into my touch. In the back room, we undress and fuck like two teenagers trying not to get caught when our parents are in the next room. It happens like this every week, and I fucking love it.

When we’re finished, breathless and satisfied, my wife slips her shirt back on over her head. “I love you so much, Wes.” With her hair mussed, and her mouth red and raw, she looks so beautiful.

“Where did that come from?”

“I don’t know.” She sits on my lap, wrapping her arms around my shoulders. “Sometimes I think I don’t say it enough.”

A smile spreads across my face. “You say it every day, babe.”

“And that’s simply not enough,” she whispers.

Something happened to us the night the two men came in here and tried to rob the joint. Not only did both of us realize we were madly in love with each other, but that life is short and can change in the blink of an eye. It’s so important to tell the people you love how you feel about them.

“I love you too, Devon Strong.” I rub my thumb against her flushed cheek. “You’re my everything.”

She presses her forehead against mine. “And you’re mine.”

We lock up and head out, holding hands like we probably would’ve if we’d dated in high school. Sometimes it’s hard to believe we didn’t. It feels like we’ve been together forever.

My sister, Phoebe, sneaks out when we arrive back home, letting us know our toddler, Jacob, fell asleep on the sofa. When we peer into the living room, the little guy is snoozing up a storm. Aunt Phoebe is quite the pushover. This wouldn’t have happened if we would have put him to bed. I don’t care, though.

Dev and I head to the sofa, turn on some TV, and join our son. It’s the first, but not the last night, we all fall asleep in front of the television. The last thought going through my head as I drift off to sleep is a silent prayer of thanks. How in God’s name did I ever get so lucky? As head protector of this family, I’ll put my life before theirs. I will protect this beautiful family until the day I die.
