She gave me a half-smile, shaking her head. “And I’ll bet, you get what you want. If you really, really want it? Almost as if you manifested it.”

“Um…” I glanced over at Jared then back at her.

“Mind control. Your true mate would be impervious. I’m guessing it doesn’t really work on Jared.”

“I…” I didn’t want to answer that. He gave me anything I wanted.

“I give you what you want because I love you and want you to be happy,” he said as if he could read my mind.

Can you read my mind now?I asked.

Nothing. Well, good. That was safe anyway.

Geez, what was I even thinking? This was insanity.

Or was it? The more I heard, the more I learned, the more it explained my life.

“So, if I entertain this craziness, tell me… If Jared is my true mate, I should be fine, right? We’re together.”

Jake shook his head. “You’re not bonded.”

That tight fluttery sensation started in my middle again. My heart slammed against my breastbone, and nerves knotted in my belly. “And…?” I whispered.

“If you’re not fully bonded, anyone can take you.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet then withdrew a card. Looking at Jared who still stood near me, he held it out. “This is my cousin, Gar, in Allstown, North Dakota. I suggest you contact him and get yourselves there ASAP. As newbies, it’s one of the best places you can be. One of the safest.”

“But you’re here,” I said.

“Honey,” Leanne said. “When you’re three hundred years old, you can be wherever you want, too. For now, though, you two need to get safe and learn about your new life. Like it or not, Jared is a vampire and you’ve been a chosen since birth. There’s no way around that. No Plan B. Go to Allstown and Gar. They’ll help you.”

“But my family…” Whether they liked Jared or not, I was very close to my mom, stepdad and two half-siblings. I couldn’t justleave.

Leanne shook her head, her eyes sad. “I’m sorry.”

“You’re sorry?” I yelled. “What does that mean?”

“They won’t understand. And you can’t tell them. You can’t explain why you don’t eat, why you don’t age, why you don’t go out in sunlight if you can help it.”

“But I’m not a vampire,” I argued.

“Yet,” Jake muttered.

I looked over at Jared, who’d moved to my side and remained largely silent while this whole thing rolled out before us. Since he’d freaked out about anyone trying to claim me and gone all feral, he’d barely spoken. But his unwavering stare burned with the same lust as I’d seen last night and this morning. I shivered, unable to restrain my reciprocal need for him. I was a moth and he was my flame. I couldn’t stay away, even though I knew he’d probably hurt me. That darkness lingered in him, but his aura remained a light blue reassuring me he wasn’t bad.

The universe and I would need to come to terms with a definition for bad, though. This whole situation seemedbad.

“I don’twantto be a vampire,” I answered through my teeth.

“You’re going to be a monster mate,” Leanne told me. “You’ll either have to make a choice or it will be made for you. I’m sorry. That’s just how it is.”

Jared growled from low in his chest, sounding ready to rip out a throat, while I wanted to scream at Leanne, myfriend, to stop saying that word. Jake put her protectively behind him.

“It’s just going to get worse,” he said. “I can’t have you here without being bonded.”

“Am I fired?” I asked in disbelief.

“I guess so.” The regret sounded clear in his voice, but I didn’t believe it any more than I believed Leanne was sorry.
