Seven wolves, all scrawny with patches of fur missing, stepped out from around the trees, moving toward the barrier. I threw my hands up. “Are you kidding me?” I shouted at the sky. The guy to my left followed my gaze before raising an eyebrow at me.

“Whatcha doing?” The man asked.

“Oh, just asking what Goddess Leto is doing. She’s bringing out some real bullshit, right now,” I scowled. The wolves prowled closer to the barrier, still growling, snarling. One of the wolves closest to the barrier threw themselves at it. The barrier held, sapping the wolf thirty feet away, making the air twinge with burned fur. I wrinkled my nose, the smell making my eyes start to water. I hoped that would have dissuaded the other wolves from following in his footsteps, but it didn’t appear that way. Every wolf started throwing themselves at the barrier over and over.

I turned to look at the man I had been talking to with a confused look on my face. He shrugged, looking incredibly bored. “What is going on?”

“Looks like the wolves are trying to kill themselves,” He said.

I threw my hands up and stalked off. I went to go find Luke, wanting to put a stop to all of this. I made it halfway back before I heard something thud overhead. I looked up and noticed the barrier was rippling overhead. I sucked in a sharp breath and started sprinting to Sam’s house.

I threw the door open and rushed inside. “Luke!”

“What?” He called out to me from the bedroom. I looked up at the barrier from inside the house.

“You should come look at this,” I responded.

“I can’t. Sam isn’t doing good.”

“I know…”

I heard him stand up and move to the doorway, frowning at me. I glanced at him, then pointed up. He walked over to me, leaning out of the door way, looking up. I took a step back so he could see the barrier clearly. He went completely still, staring up at the barrier. He turned toward me slowly, his mouth open, clearly not able to find the right words. He raised a finger, needing a second to process what was happening.

“You…uh, so, um…w-what is happening?” Luke finally stammered out.

I laughed. I couldn’t help it. It was that or mentally break down. Luke was still stammering and trying to figure out what was happening outside. I finally got myself under control. I cleared my throat and shifted my weight, uncomfortable with what needed to be said.

“I’m pretty sure the barrier is coming down because Sam is dying, Luke.”

He froze again, his hands clenching into fists. His eyes widened and he started to gasp. He shook his head from side to side, trying to regain control. He squeezed his eyes shut and hyperventilated. I planted a hand on his shoulder and squeezed, letting him ground himself on the feeling of the pressure on his arm. He took a few deep breaths, then opened his eyes.

His wolf flashed in his eyes, his jaw clenched, his lips pressed together, and his fists tightened. I cocked my head at him and he gave me a curt nod. He turned on his heel and stomped into the bedroom. He slammed the door behind him and I turned to look back at the barrier above us. It was still shimmering, like it was about to come down.

I walked out of the house, staring up at the sky. The barrier shimmered again and then burst into tiny shimmering trials of light falling to the ground. I closed my eyes, dread spreading through me. It wasn’t long before the sounds of fighting met my ears. Luke’s mournful howl pierced the air and caused shivers to roll down my back. Tears came into my eyes and I took a shuddering breath.

Jake came sprinting up to me, his eyes wide and his face full of sweat. His veins were standing out in his neck and clenched his hands into fists. He looked panicked. “Who was that?”

“Luke. Sam isn’t doing well,” I explained, gesturing to the cabin behind me. Jake’s devastation broke through his panic and then he took a deep breath.

“We’re getting killed out here. We need help.”

“I know, but we’re not going to get it from Luke. What’s happening out there?”

“The outsiders are attacking from the south side of the lands. I can’t take any more men over there without sacrificing the security of the rest of the town,” Jake said, running his hands through his hair and turning around in a panicked circle. I stopped him, placing my hands on his shoulders.

“Alright, bud. You need to take a deep breath and calm down. We’re going to get through this.”

“How?”

“One step at a time. First, you go over to the south side and help them out. I’m going to get some backup over to you as soon as I can, then I’ll join in on the fight.”

“What backup?”

“We don’t have time for your questions. Move! Get over there,” I yelled, shoving him toward the sounds of fighting. He gave me a weird look and then took off sprinting, shifting as he ran. I shook my head and hoped I was making the right choice. I took off sprinting in the opposite direction, listening for the sounds I was expecting to hear. It didn’t take me long to find the right building. I burst in the front door, ducking as a chair came flying at my head.

“Nice aim, ladies. However, we need to get this show on the road. We’re getting our asses kicked out here because the game has changed, so we need some support. Would anyone be game helping us out?” I asked, panting. The women in the room all glanced at each other and then as one, they all raised their hands. I released a breath in relief.

“Thank you. Alright, here’s what needs to happen. Who’s able to communicate with the entire pack?”
