Dean

I can’t believe I just did that. In front of everyone. I’ve never had the best control over my wolf, but he’s never taken over like that. He’s definitely pushed me to violence, but I was shaken at how quickly he had grabbed control. I was just thankful that he hadn’t forced the shift and attacked our pack member. I took a shaky breath, trying to get a hold of myself and refocus on my job.

“Is this how you run your pack,Your Majesty? It seems like you don’t have a lot of control over what is going on around here,” Jack sneered, his gaze lingering on me. I sent a silent snarl his way, ignoring the way my wolf was pushing me to rip his throat out. I had caught the way he was staring at Amara and I didn’t like it.

So much for not wanting to mate with Amara.

I frowned, glancing at Jason over my shoulder, before returning my attention back to Jack. My wolf made me keep watch of Oliver, the pack member who had bumped into Amara. I had to keep reminding my wolf that Oliver was a pack member - he wasn’t a beta, wasn’t high up in the pack, and didn’t make a lot of waves for us. There was no reason for me to want to kill him. He did nothing wrong.

He touched our mate.

She’s not our mate!

Yes. She is.

I can’t handle you right now. We need to be focused on protecting Jason.

Jason isn’t our mate and he can protect himself.

It’s our job and honor to protect Jason. He is our Alpha and King.

My wolf went silent, responding to my argument with a huff of annoyance. I cleared my throat, trying to get myself to stay focused on my job. This was getting ridiculous. I couldn’t keep myself on task and it was going to get someone killed.

“You are making a mistake,Jason,”Jack sneered. I sighed, rolling my eyes.

“Seriously? Can’t you remember anything? You’re supposed to address him as Your Majesty,” Lily mocked, rolling her eyes and shaking her head. I suppressed a smirk, loving that girl even more. Jack’s face grew bright red and his wolf flashed in his eyes. His lip curled in a snarl and he took a step forward.

“That’s enough,” I snapped. I stepped off the stage and gripped a hand on Jack’s shoulder. My wolf pushed forward, ready to take Jack on at any moment. He turned toward me slowly, raising an eyebrow and looking at my hand expectantly. I gripped him harder, making sure to dig my thumb into the crook of his collarbone and causing him to wince. He grabbed my wrist before I could tighten my grip anymore, but I grabbed him with my other hand and pulled him away. He grunted, struggling under my grip.

“Jack, you’re not going to get what you want. So, it’s time to find a compromise. We’re trying to create a regime that benefits everyone in it. We’re not trying to repeat the mistakes of the past. You’re going to have to take a step back and stop coming at us like we’re your enemy. We’re trying to work with everyone here,” Lily said, stepping up next to Jason and wrapping her arm around his waist. I kept them both in the corner of my eye.

Jack jerked in my grip, his wolf starting to flash in his eyes again as he regarded the two of them. I shifted in front of him, making him look directly in my eyes and let my own wolf bleed through. “It’s time to walk away, Jack - before I make you.”

He snarled at me, letting a growl loose, but I let my wolf bleed through even more, my claws pushing through into his skin, the metallic scent of blood filling the air. He snapped his teeth at me, his canines starting to lengthen. I kept my grip on his shoulder, but turned him around and walked him toward the door. His supporters shifted out of my way, looking bewildered and confused as they watched me push him out the door. I shoved him away from me, shut the door in his face, and turned around.

“Now that the trash has been taken out, maybe we can get back to business? Unless I need to escort anyone else out?” I asked, brushing my hands and making my way back up to stand next to Jason. I looked at him expectantly, tucking my hands behind my back. Jason chuckled, wiping his hand down his mouth and looking amused. My wolf huffed with pride, then sank back down in annoyance at me.

“Alright, let’s get back to it. I know there’s been a lot of confusion and fighting, but we have a lot to cover before the night is through,” Lily redirected everyone. I settled back into my loose stance, my feet set hip-width apart and my hands clasped behind my back, ready to jump into action if someone was stupid enough to try to attack Jason or Lily. They were both my responsibility. I had to keep myself alert and focused while they could be in harm’s way. Of course, today of all day’s would be the time my wolf decided not to help me at all. He kept tugging my attention away again and I was getting seriously pissed off.

Now is not the time for this bullshit!

Our mate is gone!

My wolf snarled back at me and with those four little words, panic overtook my senses. I whipped around, searching for Amara, hoping to spot her strawberry blonde head bobbing in the crowd. I couldn’t see her anywhere and started marching down the stage, intent on ripping apart anyone in my way to finding her. A hand clamped on my shoulder.

I whipped around with a snarl and my claws burst out.

“Dean. Knock it off,” Jason’s sharp voice cut through my panic just a bit.

“Where is she?”

“She took Elle and Sarah back to our rooms. Shaun is with them. They’re safe,” Jason said under his breath. He glanced sideways, reminding me that we weren’t alone. My wolf pushed forward at the thought of another unmated man around our mate, but I held him back as much as I could.

“Jason…” I began. He shook his head, a hint of amusement on his face.

“Go.”

I rushed out the side door and into the hallway. I looked both ways, letting my wolf push forward again and scent the air. I could smell Amara’s scent of jasmine and tuberose wafting through the hallway, leading me toward her. My wolf was on edge because he could also smell Shaun and two foreigners. I may have known it was Elle and Sarah, but my wolf didn’t care about anything other than the fact that his mate was alone with people he didn’t really know, an unmated male, and no one he trusted.
