My father was going to hand me over to Owen. When that didn’t work, he was willing to sacrifice me to gain control. Or maybe that was the demon. Maybe he never intended to kill me. I’d never get to ask him.

“Owen.” I looked toward the place where he’d last stood. He’d tried to help me. He’d tried to save. Even after everything we’d been though, he’d fought for me. While Luke had been willing to sacrifice me. My heart felt like it shattered. “He has the demon in him now, doesn’t he?”

“He does,” Scarlett confirmed.

“So all this was for nothing. You killed my father and sent the demon into another body,” I said.

“It wasn’t for nothing,” Zoe said. “Your life bond is broken.”

“Good,” I snapped. “I don’t want anything to do with you. I don’t want anything to do with any of you.”

“Morgan…” Luke began.

I shook my head. “Don’t. Don’t pretend there was ever anything between us. You did the right thing when you didn’t take things further. At least you had enough decency for that.”

“I never meant for any of this to happen,” he said.

“Where’s Jasmine?” I asked.

“We have her guarding the ward on the way out. She’s holding it open so we can slip through,” Zoe said.

“Did she know?” I asked.

Zoe shook her head.

“You should go. All of you.” I felt like my heart had been torn from my chest and stamped on with Zoe’s combat boots.

“Come with us,” Luke said. “You should be somewhere where you feel safe.”

“That’s not with you,” I said. “Not anymore.”

“Let’s go,” Zoe said.

“It’s not safe here,” Luke said. “Owen could come back.”

“I’m not your concern,” I replied. “And between you and Owen, only one of you tried to help me while I was stuck on that stage.”

“He’s not himself anymore,” Luke said.

“And whose fault is that?” I snapped.

“Luke,” Scarlett set her hand on the shifter’s upper arm. “It’s time to go. Morgan knows how to find you if she wants to see you.”

“That’s never going to happen.” I balled my hands into fists. “Tell Jasmine what happened. She should get to decide for herself.”

As I watched them walk away, I felt like something was dying inside me. Maybe it was the last glimmer of hope I’d held onto that there were decent people out there.

Jasmine found me shortly after, her eyes wet with tears. “They told me everything. I’m so sorry.”

I fell into her embrace, grateful for her comforting presence. After we’d cried all our tears, I stepped away from her and wiped my cheeks. “What do we do now?”

“Anything we want.” She held up her wrist, revealing smooth, even, unmarked skin.

My eyes widened. “Is that magic?”

She shook her head. “Scarlett removed it. We’re free.”
