Maxwell didn’t seem to be totally convinced that Lucas is only three hundred something years old, though he has no way to prove it. Lucas has covered his tracks well and has used human proxies to hold titles and file paperwork for his various properties and businesses. He wasn’t legally able to put things in his name until somewhat recently, anyway.

Still, Maxwell has to be building some sort of case against us, if not just me. I’ve been in plenty of situations that required alerting the authorities without being able to tell them the whole story. The fact that he brought up how I was the one to bring Easton to the hospital wasinteresting. He made sure to point out how it was also interesting that Easton was rather tip-lipped about the whole thing, stating over and over that he doesn’t remember what happened. He said he was so lucky I remembered he was going out for a run along that road.

Though if I’m ranking things on my oh-shit list, this is at the bottom. I tap the screen on the baby monitor, seeing Freya at the bottom of the swing, keeping Juliet comforted and warm. Feeling restless, I get up and walk to the fridge, opening it. I’m not hungry and nothing looks appetizing. I close the fridge and go back to the counter, putting a hand on the back of my neck.

“Fuck it,” I say and pour myself a half-glass of wine. My fingers wrap around the delicate stem and I bring the glass to my mouth, taking a tiny sip. The urge to gulp this whole glass down is strong, as it wasn’t all that long ago I was drowning my issues with Moscato. I’ve always had a higher-than-normal tolerance for alcohol for someone my size, which I know now is due to being a nephilim. All of my angel-powers are unlocked, making me wonder if one glass will even do anything. I’d love to sink into a wine-induced sleep.

Which wouldn’t last long with a newborn in the house.

I eye the time on the microwave and take another small sip of wine. Can I really let myself trust that Osiris really will show up at the witching hour? I take one last small drink of wine and then go to the little mudroom by the backdoor and shove my feet into my boots. All of our patio furniture arrived today, and I haphazardly arranged some of it. I know it’ll have to be moved when the final landscaping goes in, but I wanted to see how it would look. I can envision Lucas and I out here, having that pool party I talked about.

We have plenty of lounge chairs and one big day-bed type chair, long enough for me to stretch out on. Half of it is covered, and I can already see myself spending hot summer days on it, laying out with a book in my hand. Silently, I slip out the door and go down the back porch steps. The night has a chill to it and I slowly walk down the path that takes me to the pool.

The electricity has been all hooked up and the plumbing was installed today for the pool house. All that’s left is putting together the barstools and then stocking the poolside bar.

“You’ll be here when it’s finally warm enough for me to swim at night,” I whisper and look up at the starry sky. “You have to be.” Inhaling deep, I go to the pool house and wave my hand in front of the door to unlock it. It’s a pretty big space for what it is, with a full bathroom, the bar area, and a sitting area inside with a fireplace. The hot tub is right by the pool house, and sitting out here by the fire on chilly nights, drying off after coming out of the hot tub makes me almost want to skip through summer and go right for fall.

But only if Lucas is here.

I already brought several logs from the woodpile by the house out here, and I put a few in the fireplace and hold my hand out, lighting them with magic. It’s midnight, and Osiris is a no-show. I shouldn’t be surprised and I shouldn’t allow myself to feel disappointment. I should have known better than to trust him. He lied about showing up…what else did he lie about?

Is Lucas not really okay? I never did see him.

I sink down on the outdoor couch next to the fire, looking at the flames until my eyes glaze over. Blinking, I turn away and see a small flicker of blue start to rise from my grass several yards away. Springing to my feet, I rush over and stop just feet from where the Horsemen appeared.

Sand starts to swirl on the ground, caught inside a circle of hellfire. The sand spins faster and faster and I hold my hands up in front of my face as little bits fly out as the cyclone grows in height. The hellfire sparks and then suddenly goes out. The sound of falling sand echoes across the otherwise silent night, and I blink, adjusting my eyes to the figure standing in front of me.

I don’t remember Osiris being that tall or that—

“Callie?”

Tears immediately fill my eyes and I open my mouth but can’t get the words to come out.

“Callie?” he calls again and this time I’m finally able to get my voice to work.

“Lucas!”

ChapterTwenty-Five

My heart thumps wildly in my chest and I stand there, rooted to the spot like a damn deer in headlights. Is this real? Am I really seeing what I think I am?

“Lucas,” I say, his name coming out a soft whisper. “Is that really you?”

“Come here and find out,” he says, his deep voice rattling right through me. He speeds forward and a tear rolls down my cheek. Lips parting, I look into his dark blue eyes and his hands land on my waist. I can feel the coolness of his skin through the thin shirt I’m wearing. I fling my arms around him, pulling him as close as possible.

He’s here.

He’s real.

“How is this possible?” I ask but we’re both taken over with desperation. Lucas grabs a fistful of my hair and moves my head back so he can kiss me. The second his lips touch mine, there’s no doubt in my mind that this is my husband.

Desire tingles down my spine, awakening everything inside me. My pussy quivers with anticipation, and my breath quickens along with my racing heart. He pushes his tongue into my mouth, kissing me with fervor. I’m instantly turned on, feeling warmth gathering between my legs. I’m getting wet already and my entire body starts to hum with desperate pleasure.

Everything around us fades away and all the matters is Lucas. He picks me up and my heart leaps in my chest. I cling to him, legs fastening around his waist. I don’t even know where we’re going and I don’t fucking care. All that matters is that Lucas is here and I need to have every single inch of him naked and against me.

Goosebumps break out along my skin as he walks us over to the daybed and sits so I’m in his lap. Straddling him, I kiss him hard and fast. Lucas can’t keep his hands off me, feeling the same desperation as I do. He’s fighting for his usual self-control, but is just as close as I am to being pushed over the edge.

“I’ve missed you so much,” I can’t help but cry, eyes closed as more tears stream down my face. Lucas rests his forehead against mine and holds me tight. My heart thumps against his chest and I know this is where I’m supposed to be.
