“It’s just…?” Carm asks.

“Days like today make me think about how it all could’ve gone another way. And what if it comes back and the outcome isn’t the same the next time?” He grips the hat in his hand so tight his knuckles turn white.

“Listen, that’s not gonna happen,” I say. “And if it did, we’ll get through it as a family. You’re not alone.”

Tears well in his eyes. “I know. It’s just—”

“Don’t go there,” Carm cuts him off. “Don’t. What you focus on expands. Don’t put that shit into the universe.”

Enzo blows out a breath. “You’re right. Okay, let’s get this damn belly on me so I can show you who the superior Mancini brother really is.”

Carm claps his hands together. “That’s what I’m talking about.”

“Can I help you?” the guy at the booth asks.

Carm turns his attention around to address him.

I clamp my hand back on Enzo’s shoulder and squeeze. He places his over my own and squeezes back.

We don’t need to say it with words—no matter what happens, I’ll be here for him.
