I place my hand on the scanner, allowing me to enter the Tomb.
Inside, the lights shine brightly, welcoming me to one of the few things on this planet that reminds me of my home.
Jacek is bending the articulating arm, examining the joint.
“How does it fare?” I ask.
“The fix ended up being easier than expected.”
“I suspect because you knew exactly what was wrong.”
His face darkens.
“Tell me why you would sabotage what we hold so dear.”
Jacek sets down the arm and downcasts his eyes. It’s rare to see a Tempest man so vulnerable. So defeated.
“I was hoping you’d overlook that.”
“Overlook the assault on my homeland!” My voice is shaking with rage.
“What will you do with me?”
“That depends on your answers.”
“It shouldn’t,” he says. “My actions should result in my death.”
“And yet I’ve called no council.”
Jacek is young and smarter than most of my men. On Tempest, he spent much of his time with his nose in a book instead of charging into battle.
The scholars of my people are not well honored, but it is they who’ve made the seeded planets possible.
