“Mine?” I ask, brow raised, bringing her fist to my chest.

She nods enthusiastically. “Yours…”

But right after the word leaves her mouth, her face falls.

“What’s wrong?”

“Um…boys? Duri and Hyun.”

“Also, mine.”

Tears flood her eyes, and through them, she smiles.

“Also, yours.”

ChapterTwenty-One

IT’S COMPLICATED

TRENT

As much as I’d love to spend the day worshiping Suki, I know that Cole has probably got his undies twisted, so we wash up and get dressed to face the fallout of the morning.

Christine chastises me for not bringing Suki to her immediately, which I can’t fault her for. Women are a precious resource in this godforsaken world, and from this day forward, my every breath will be dedicated to keeping Suki and her boys safe.

Letsomeone come for them. It’s their funeral.

I find Cole in the command post with Gabriel, Blake, Atticus, and Gage, discussing the situation.

“When are we stringing him up?” I ask. “Because I wanna be the one driving.”

A tense look crosses Cole’s face.

“Don’t tell me you’re giving the bastard a pass,” I challenge, pressing my palms into the War Room table and glaring at our unofficial leader. “You were quite clear when you told us what happens if a man assaults a Kept Woman.”

“It’s more complicated than that.” He thrusts his fingers through his hair as he paces in a circle. “Fuck—if I’d known.”

“What the fuck do you mean?” I say, my voice edging with rage.

“It’s his goddamn lab,” Cole says quietly. “It’s become a problem.”

As furious as I am, he’s piqued my interest. “How so?”

“After we took the bastard away, we went into his lab and had a look. There were all kinds of test tubes and microscopes and freezers.”

“Yeah, and?”

“It wasn’t like months ago when we first took over the Keep. He’s been…experimenting with things.”

“What do you mean?”

“There was a chicken…and it was infected.”

I blink back at him. “With what?”

“It was a rager.”

I’m overwhelmed with dizziness. Animals weren’t affected by the dead plague. If that were the case, it’d already be game over.
