“He-was-testing-how-long-it-takes-to-transition,” she says, pronouncing each word carefully.

“What about this?” Atticus sets a bunch of printed sheets in front of her.

She scans the sheets, biting her lower lip in a way that makes my cock pulse. Yeah, just about everything she does turns me on, but now is not the time.

Suddenly, her head snaps up. “Fuck!”

I know it’s bad because I have never heard her utter that word.

Cole cocks his head. “Tell me.”

Her thumbs fly over the translator, and we wait with bated breath.

Instead of reading from the screen as I told her to for practice, she hands the translator over to Cole and buries her face in her hands.

“What the fuck is going on?” I growl, my heart leaping in my chest.

Cole reads it, his face growing tense and angry.

“It was all planned. TerraBlight Pharmaceutical and a bunch of others. They grew the fucking virus in a lab, then made a vaccine. They were going to release the virus, let it wipe out a shit ton of people, then offer to inoculate those who survived—the strongest of us.”

“No…fucking…way,”I say under my breath.

“So…should we try to distribute the vaccine?” Eva asks.

We look over at Suki, who is pouring through pages of text. A kernel of pride blooms within me, knowing that she’s playing such an important role.

After what seems like an hour, Suki takes the translator back and starts plugging in more information. We wait patiently, on the edge of our proverbial seats.

She hands the device to Cole, and he starts reading again.

“The goal was to control all aspects of human life. Health, food consumption, and ability to travel. After humans were inoculated, they were going to release an avian strand, telling people the virus naturally mutated to bird hosts. A vaccine would be administered to the avian population just as a new mammal strain went into effect, annihilating livestock. Tightening the noose around mankind. Something about the vaccines would force people to comply.”

Cole sets down the device, his face somber.

“There’s no way this was all planned,” Eva says, her voice wrought with emotion.

“Think about it. They had this place constructed for a reason. I mean, we thought it was a bigwig fallout shelter, and it was, but now we know it was for a created event. The start of the dead plague.”

The place is so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Everything he’s said just seems so inconceivable.

Suki breaks the silence.

“Too much for now….ah, need time.”

“Of course,” Cole says, then looks at me. “Do you mind if we take the texts back to your place so Suki can take notes and translate it all? There’s a lot, and I hate to be a hard ass because it needs to be done quickly.”

“Roger that.” I grab a cart, and Eva starts moving stacks of notebooks into it.

Atticus chimes in with, “I have an idea as to how to better understand the files in the computer, but I’m going to need some things.”

“That will be priority one,” Cole says.

I hold my hand out for Suki, and when she takes it, I pull her to a stand.

“It was great meeting like this, but Suki and I are headed out. I’ll make sure she gets cracking on the texts as soon as they’re delivered, but right now, we need a breath.”

Cole gazes in the distance, looking deep in thought, but manages to utter, “Understood.”
