He could feel his cheeks burning. “Yeah.”

“Like cakes and stuff?”

“Yeah.”

She grabbed him by the shirt and kissed him. Deeply. He wasn’t about to argue. Hell, he was ready to throw the plates across the table and have his wicked way with her, until she abruptly backed off as quickly as she had attacked.

“This is perfect.”

“It is?” He had no idea why he was suddenly worried, but he sensed he had a huge reason to be very, very worried.

Then her smile grew even larger as she nodded, her eyes twinkling with merriment. “Oh, yes. You can make the birthday cake. How special would that be? Gabby will love it.”

Oh, shit.

Well, he admitted to himself earlier in the kitchen he was ready to spill the beans on a hobby he’d never shared with them. Why the hell not?

“If you say so.”

He swore Mia’s smile brightened even more, if that was even possible.

“Let’s eat.”

“It’s so beautiful. I hate to ruin it.”

Oh, no. She had to eat it. Just to know that it tasted as delicious as it looked. He snatched a pretzel from the word “love” and chomped with vigor.

“Eat. We have a lot to do today, especially if you want me to make the cake.”

When she took her first bite and moaned loudly, he knew this would be a breakfast from hell. Because it’d take everything in his power not to ravish her silly before finishing the meal.

“You know I’m going to make you cook me breakfast every morning from now on, don’t you?” she said between bites, a happy smile still plastered on her face.

For her, he’d do anything.

“Your wish is my command, sweetheart. Say the word, and it’s done.”

Today. Always. Forever.

Damn. Too bad he couldn’t have fit that on the waffle. Those were words he needed her to grasp as well.

He neededto stop being so sweet. She didn’t deserve it.

Or maybe she did.

No, she knew she did. Everyone deserved to be loved.

Except, growing up with a father who constantly told her she was ugly and worthless, it was hard to change the mindset to something positive and beautiful. The only thing that saved her from believing his words were her mother’s words ringing in her other ear.

You’re special, Mia baby. You’re beautiful and kind. Don’t you ever forget it.

She had braved asking her mom when she was fourteen why she stayed with her dad with the terrible way he treated them. Her answer had been, “Because. You’ll understand when you’re older.”

Two short years later, her mother was gone from the cancer destroying her completely, and Mia was left all alone with the devil himself.

It didn’t take long for Mia to understand her mother’s words with ease.
