“Please tell me you’re not thinking about asking this woman to marry you already. She’s not right for you.”

“How about you let me worry about my love life, and you worry about your own. Sounds like it’s not all cookies and cream like you’re trying to make it sound.”

“Let’s not do this, Mase. I don’t want to argue.”

Mase’s features turned stern. “Then don’t get on my case about Hope. You don’t know her.”

“You barely know her.”

“I gotta go. How about you go buy your fiancée a ring and worry about your own love life.”

“Mase—”

His brother didn’t wait. The phone call ended and his home screen popped to life. He noticed one new text message. When he opened it up, his heart dropped a little. Mia canceled on him. He had been looking forward to lunch and then shopping.

He started to reply but stopped.

What to say?

It bothered him she so easily canceled on him. Sure, it was to hang out with Gabby, which normally wouldn’t be a big deal. But they were lying to her right now, and that bothered him. How could she cancel with him and hang out with Gabby and continue to keep the truth from her? He didn’t understand it.

He wasn’t in the mood for another fight either. Once was enough. More than enough, considering it was with his brother—again.

Of course, Mase was right. Who was he to give relationship advice, when his own was so complicated. And it shouldn’t be. It didn’t have to be.

Although it bugged him, he knew he couldn’t ignore her.

Okay. Text me when you’re done. Miss you too.

He ached to put ‘I love you,’ and he should’ve. But how many times would he have to say it before she returned the sentiment? Again, anyway. She said it once, but he wanted to keep hearing it.

That was the thing. He’d have to keep saying it for her to believe it. Truly, undeniably believe it. Mia’s heart had been so shattered, beaten and bruised by her father, he knew it’d take patience and understanding to get to the bottom of her heart. And he was prepared to fight every step of the way.

I love you.

He already felt better by adding those three simple words. He’d show her he wouldn’t give up easily. Slipping his phone back in his pocket, he knew what he had to do.

Buy her an engagement ring.

Something he should’ve done days ago.

He grabbed a quick sandwich from a deli on the way to the mall, gobbling it up by the time he arrived at his destination. His hand started to get clammy when he neared the jewelry store.

This wasn’t a big deal. He already asked her to marry him. She said yes. This would seal the deal.

“Can I help you?” a gentleman in a nice black suit asked as he walked up to him browsing some rings.

“Hopefully.” Jaxson grinned, trying to hide the terror swimming in his veins. He had never purchased jewelry for a woman before. Flowers, yes. Tickets to a game, yep. Nice presents for her birthday, of course. But jewelry never entered the picture. He couldn’t say why other than he always felt like jewelry made a big statement and he had never dated a woman to the point he wanted to say something big to her.

Until Mia.

It had always been Mia. Deep down, he knew this.

Did she?

“I’m looking for an engagement ring for my fiancée?”

The man arched a brow. “She lose her other one?”
