“I’m here, sweetie, need some help?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Are you dressed?”

“Yes.”

“Then come on out and let me see.” Stepping through the curtain, she saw him smile. “You look great. Is that the one you’ve picked?”

“I don’t know. I mean, it fits well, but I wasn’t sure about wearing a bunch of layers underneath like I did yesterday.”

Liam reached out and wrapped his hand around her upper arm, giving it a squeeze, then reached down and squeezed her thigh. She was about to ask what he was doing when he put his hands on her waist and gave a squeeze. Her slight flinch and gasp had him asking, “Are you all right?”

“Yes, but why are you patting me?”

He laughed and set her back a bit. “I’m just checking the fit. One of the benefits of a snowsuit is that you won’t have to wear several layers and I believe you have enough room to wear just leggings and a sweater underneath.” Tugging the hood up, he tightened it around her face and tied the cord into a bow. “I’d say this fits you perfectly. You look like little Miss Snowy, though you are pink and your nose isn’t near as long.”

She giggled and smiled as he bent to kiss the tip of her nose. After changing back into her clothes, she brought all of the suits out, having neatly refolded those she’d tried on.

“Why, aren’t you sweet! Most customers just leave the clothes they don’t want scattered on the floor. Thank you, Elena.”

“You’re welcome. Oh, the one on top is perfect.”

Liam had her try on some thicker gloves and added a few pair of knee socks to the pile Mrs. Steadman had started on the counter.

“Do you sell corn here?” Elena asked.

“Feed corn or popcorn?”

“Um, both actually, unless… can you pop and eat feed corn?”

“Oh, no. Totally different crops. We have feed corn, but you’ll need to get popcorn at the grocery store. They have a few varieties including some of the microwave kind.”

When she saw Liam holding some sort of metal basket, Elena asked, “What is that?”

“A popcorn basket. We can pop our corn over the fire.”

“Really? That’s so cool!”

Gloria agreed and as he paid for their purchases, including two large sacks of feed corn and birdseed, she reminisced about the nights her family would use the same sort of basket and then string the popcorn to hang on their Christmas tree. “We also strung cranberries. It made for a wonderful memory.”

“We’re going to string some and hang it outside,” Elena said. “The animals can enjoy it too.”

“That’s a wonderful idea. Do you have twine and a big needle?”

“No, I guess I didn’t think of that.”

Gloria was all too happy to provide them with a large ball of twine and a couple of needles.

“I’ve never seen needles this big,” Elena said, holding one up.

“Well, that’s not really a needle you’d use, say, to put a button on. It’s one used in upholstery, but you will need it to make your strings.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Steadman.”

“You’re most welcome, and it was certainly a pleasure meeting you, Elena. I hope you and your fiancé make a lot of memories as you grow old together.”

Elena only then remembered the diamond on her finger. “Thank you. I know we will.”
