“Bullshit! I thought I knew you. Thought I could trust you.”

“You can trust me, but—” His lies are cut short as my anger takes control, and I pound into his body like a fucking punching bag at the gym. When I’m spent, I turn away from him, unable to see the damage I’ve done to someone I thought was a friend.

I hear Zak talking to him, trying to get him to give up whatever it is that turned him into the fucking rat bastard he is.

I swipe a towel from the bench and wipe the sweat and blood from my face as my phone pings with a message. Throwing the towel back down, I pick it up and open the message. It’s a photo of a burning house, and at first, I miss the figure standing to the side at the forefront. Zooming in to get a better look, features that I recognise emerge.

Roxanne.

“Son of a bitch!” I shove the phone into my back pocket and turn to Zak. “You good with him?”

“Sure. What’s going on?”

I don’t get a chance to answer as Axel pipes up instead. “Roxy. He’ll never stop till he gets what he wants, Maddox. He’s gunning for her.”

I storm across the basement floor until I’m almost chest to chest with Axel. Taking his chin in my grasp, I lean forward and snarl in his face, “If there’s one fucking hair out of place on her head, I’m going to come back here and show you exactly how fucked up I am. Then I’m going to make sure every fucker out there gets to see what happens to rats!” I throw his head back as I release him, and it bounces off the wall with a crack. “Do what you want to the cunt, but I want him alive when I get back. I have something special for this particular traitor.”

Any guilt I was feeling about Axel has been eclipsed by my concern for Roxanne. I’m not ready to tell her or fully admit my feelings for her, but I’ll be damned if I’ll let anything happen to her after we’ve spent the last ten years of our lives protecting her.

I know Zak feels the same, although we’ve never really spoken about it. It’s always just been there between us, a mutual affection for out feisty little blonde firecracker. I may have buried my guilt at leaving her the way we did and selfishly stealing her first kiss the night everything changed, but it took years and me claiming countless lives before I reached this point.

I watched from afar as she spiralled out of control on a well-worn path of self-destruct while I became a ruthless, no holds barred killer.

There’s no better way to exorcise your demons than spilling the blood of your enemies and being buried balls deep in pussy and sky high on a cocktail of drugs.

Only problem with all of that is that every time I pulled that fucking trigger, I pictured someone else’s face. Every time I fucked some chick, I wished it were someone else. And every time I got high, her face haunted my mind like a spectre.

I race through town to Roxanne’s house with a fire so fierce inside me I can almost feel my blood boiling beneath my skin as it surges through my veins.

When I screech to a stop outside what used to be Roxanne’s home and see the shell of what’s left, I explode.

Slamming my already battered fists against the steering wheel, the dash and even the window, which breaks into a thousand tiny pieces all of which remain in place.

There’s only one person who is sure to know where she is. Hitting dial on my phone, I don’t even let him get out a hello.

“Where the fuck is she?” I hear rustling in the background and a door closing before his voice comes back at me.

“I told you to never call me on this number, Lawler.”

“I don’t give two shits what you told me. Now, where the fuck is she?” I grit my teeth and feel my jaw crack with the force.

“Tucked up in bed if she has any fucking sense,” he mutters, and I hear him rubbing at the day-old stubble on his chin. “What’s going on?”

“You better hope she wasn’t tucked up in bed seeing as her house is a smouldering pile of fucking ash.”

“Fucking hell.”

“Yeah, fucking hell. Now find her. Can’t you track her on her phone?”

“She’s not a damn kid, Lawler. Now, give me two minutes, and I’ll call you back.” He doesn’t wait for a reply before he’s hung up.

Agitation eats at me, and I’m just about to call him back when my phone rings.

“About fucking time!”

“She’s fine, she’s safe. She wasn’t home and is staying at an Airbnb for now.”

“You got an address?”
