Page 60 of Lawless Deception

Rox isn’t fooling me at all with her bullshit disappearing act or her ‘girl talk’ comment down in the cellar. I heard way more than she thinks I did.

Maddox and I have been doing our own investigation into what happened to Star, but now it seems that Rox knows more than we do. And by the sound of it, Eva is connected in some way or other.

Entering the lounge, Axel and Eva are just taking a seat, introductions obviously over, and Rick is wearing a disapproved frown, which he’s throwing in the direction of Maddox. No doubt at the state of Axel’s face. It’s a good job he can’t see the rest of his body.

Maddox, however, isn’t in the slightest bothered by the eyes burning a hole in the side of his face, he’s too busy looking at me. His eyes asking the question of where Rox is. I raise my chin to him to let him know she’s coming. I’m not sure if that’s a lie or not.

Tuning into the conversation going on between Axel and Rick, I hear Rick asking questions about possible threats. He demands answers in a commanding tone that only an ex-military man can.

After a couple of minutes, Rick now having turned his questions to Eva, Maddox comes and stands beside me. Keeping close eyes on Rick and this Drew guy that tagged along with him, he whispers, “Where is she?”

“Bathroom break. Give her a minute,” I reply. And as if she heard us talking about her, she strolls in. Her back is straight, her chin held high and her fierce look of composure back in place.

My dick perks up, and I curse beneath my breath at its shitty timing. Images of her riding Maddox while I eat her out invade my mind and don’t help one fucking bit. Made even worst as she strolls past us, and I get a heady waft of her perfume.

Rox takes up position next to Jess, standing behind the sofa that Rick is seated on as he continues to grill Axel and Eva.

“Is there anything else you can tell me about Laskin, Eva? Anything at all.” She shakes her head but keeps her eyes down.

It’s a lie.

Rick keeps his gaze on her, letting her know he’s not falling for it either, but a minute later, he turns to us.

“Bonner and Rogers, what’s—”

“You don’t need to worry about them,” Maddox states defensively.

Rick chuckles. “Okay, big man, I call bullshit on that.” I feel Maddox tense beside me, and I even catch Rox wince. “If Whitmore is here, in whatever this fucked up mess you’ve involved her in, then I want more than ‘you don’t need to worry about them’ as a guarantee.”

“I don’t owe you a damn thing, least of all an explanation aboutmybusiness,Sergeant Sullivan,” Maddox fires back.

Rick rises to his feet. “If you want my help, then you better start talking. And it’s Lieutenant Sullivan, you piece of shit.”

Maddox is so fucking fast when he moves, I almost miss latching onto his arm, but I do just as Drew steps in between Rick and Maddox. Jess comes to Rick’s side, and Rox pushes her way past Drew to stop in front of Maddox.

Fury flashes in her eyes and her nostrils flare. “Out!” she orders, but Maddox hasn’t even looked at her yet. Smacking his chest to get his attention, she tells him again, “Out now, Maddox. I’ve had enough of this bollocks. Fucking men and their ridiculous ‘I’ve got a bigger dick than you’ bull crap.”

Finally, his gaze drops to her, and I already know what’s going through his mind. God help Rox.

His only response is a growl before he steps back, and I can see that Rox thinks she’s won. Fool. Her posture relaxes a little just as Maddox strikes. Swiping her off the floor and over his shoulder, he turns and strides from the room to a chorus of ‘what the fuck are you doing?’ and ‘put me the fuck down!’

I shake my head, turning back to the room and the shocked faces of everyone. The only person who looks remotely amused is Jess. I like her. And despite the fact he rubs Maddox up the wrong way, I actually like Rick.

Maddox and he share a lot of similar traits, least of all being an overbearing cunt. Maria comes into the lounge halting further questions or commotion and carrying a tray of pastries. She doesn’t bat an eye at the continuing shouts coming from Rox and places the tray on the coffee table.

“Please help yourselves. Can I get anyone a drink? Tea, coffee, beer?”

I feel eyes on me and turn to see Axel watching me. I give him a nod to let him know that we are good, and he returns it before grabbing a croissant for Eva and one for himself.

I’m about to sneak off when a voice from behind stops me.

“Have fun.” Twisting my head, I see Jess striding toward me while taking a bite of an almond twist.

“Excuse me?” It’s a stupid question. I know exactly what she meant.

“Pretend all you like, but I see the way you look at her, both of you.” She tilts her head, a smirk pulling at her mouth. “Be warned, Zak, don’t fucking hurt her,” she says casually, a grin still on her face.

I don’t show any reaction to her threat, and it’s not because I don’t think she means it. On the contrary, Jess isn’t one to make idol threats. She doesn’t realise we know about her past and the part Rox played in helping Jess get revenge on the guys that hurt her as a teen. Something else we have our little friend to thank for that.
