Roxanne will truly kill me if anything happens to Eva, but she is my priority. “Yes, she’s safe.” I let out a sigh that is echoed by Laskin’s own.

“Very good. I suggest it stays that way, yes?” I nod even though he can’t see me, but he continues as though he has. Honestly, I wouldn’t put it past him to have some fucking sniper watching me. “The Irish.” He states it so matter of fact that I almost think he’s joking, but then a text comes through on my phone.

Switching out of the call, I open the message and see an image of Roxanne climbing into a silver car alongside a man in a suit. I don’t recognise him.

“Mr Ethan Scott. Solicitor to the Kavanagh family.” I curse and Laskin laughs, a deep chuckle that tells me he’s enjoying this. “Sometimes our enemies aren’t our enemies at all. It does work both ways though. Good night, Mr Lawler. I’ll be in touch.”

The line goes dead, and I’m left staring at the photo of Roxanne. She looks pissed, but she’s not being forced into the car, physically anyway. I’ll eviscerate Kavanagh with a blunt knife if he’s so much as laid a finger on her. Then I’ll destroy his whole fucking family. Every last one!

I find the number I want and hit dial, connecting to Bluetooth, I drive while I wait for him to answer. It rings a couple of times before he answers.

“Find me everything you can on Ethan Scott. And do it fucking fast.”

“He’s a solicitor. What do you want with him?” Mitch asks, sounding a little confused. He obviously doesn’t know about his connection to the Kavanagh’s either. It seems not many people do. The Kavanagh name doesn’t hold the same sway here—I have a feeling that’s going to change.

“He’s the solicitor that Roxanne left the station with, Mitch. And that’s not even the best part. He’s the fucking solicitor to the Kavanagh family. The Irish have her.” Mitch is silent save for the deep breaths I picture him snorting down his nose like a raging bull.

“Give me an hour. I’ll meet you at yours.” Before I can reply, he’s gone.

He might be a cop and I might give him shit, but Mitch is a good guy. After we dropped Roxanne off the night she found her mother, we heard the sirens as we were leaving and turned back. Theo must have had someone watching us and called to order us to stay away. I watched everything that night. I watched Mitch arrive on the scene. I watched as he carried her from the flat covered in blood. I watched her continually calling us, more tears streaming down her face every time there was no answer. And I watched as she was driven away.

I never struggled with any order Theo gave us, but that night was the test of all tests. If he was looking for proof that we were committed to him, loyal to him, and could follow orders no matter what, then he got it. There were several times that night where I had to physically hold myself in place and remember why we were doing it.

Zak and I had been skirting around the idea of joining Theo for some time, but Rogers certainly forced our hand. Jealousy clouded his mind, and his response was extreme. It wasn’t till years later that we discovered the bigger reason he snapped. It’s one we’ve been keeping too but there’s no way we can possibly keep it from Roxanne any longer just as Zak pointed out last night.

“Zak! Zak!” I holler as I storm through the front door.

“In here,” he calls back from the kitchen. The words have barely left his mouth before I’m walking through the door.

“I just had a very fucking interesting conversation with a certain Russian,” I tell him, pulling my phone from my pocket. Opening it to the picture Laskin sent me, I drop the phone on the counter in front of him.

Picking it up, I see the moment he recognises Roxanne. “Who’s the suit?”

“Well, that’s the million-dollar fucking question. Ethan Scott, solicitor. Not just any solicitor, the family solicitor to none other than the Kavanagh’s. Mitch is coming here with whatever info he can dig up on the guy. In the meantime, we have another problem. Laskin knows about Eva, and for some reason he seems to be under the impression it’s our job to ensure she’s safe.”

“Laskin called you to tell you about this?” he asks, gesturing to the phone before handing it back to me. I nod, and he continues, “And he told you what? That he knows about Eva?”

“Yeah, but I got the impression he doesn’t know where she is and didn’t want to either. He just wanted to know she was safe. And he said some cryptic shit about our enemies not being our enemies.”

“Is there anything from your meet with Kavanagh that would point to why he would want Rox, aside from the obvious.” Neither of us need to say the most obvious reason he would take her. Kidnapping and using your enemies most valued people as leverage is part of our life. It’s why men like us tend not to have much we care about.

“Nah, Kavanagh was his usual charming fucking self, but Roxanne was quick to put him in his place. I don’t get it. On one level Kavanagh taking Roxanne makes perfect sense, but Laskin? Where the fuck does he fit into this, and why would he offer up info freely?” Just then there’s a knock at the door, and I hear Maria answering it before Mitch’s voice echoes down the hall as he walks this way with Maria in tow.

“You better have some good fucking news, Mitch!” The look on his face tells me that’s not necessarily true.

Stepping to the counter, he slaps a folder bulging with papers down, then turns to Maria. “I think you’ll be able to help us understand this a bit more.”

ChapterSix

Roxy

Aiden Kavanagh scrubs up rather well, and if my distaste of the man wasn’t so high, I’d even say he was attractive. Wearing a suit that looks to be straight from the set ofPeaky Blinders, you’d be hard pushed to convince anyone he was the eldest son of the head of the Irish Mob.

“‘Tis nice to see you again, Detective,” he states as I settle into the seat and watch as Ethan fucking Scott climbs into the front passenger seat.

“Shame I can’t return the sentiment. And you can fuck off with thedetectivebullshit.”

“Now, now, that’s not a polite way to speak to the man responsible for securing your release, Roxy.”
