“You’re right he’s not. If only she could see that.” I smile at her, then she turns round and pours herself another coffee, and I leave her to it.

Back on the floor, the guys are still at the poker table with Jason dutifully watching from my roulette table.

“Did I miss anything?” I ask as I take my place behind the table again.

“No, they seem to be quite happy losing a shit load of cash.”

I glance around the room before coming back to the guys at the poker table just as one of them loses a hand. His face drops, eyes narrowing, and I can see he’s not at all happy.

“Might want to watch the guy third from the right. He’s not looking toohappyanymore,” I tell Jason just as a man in a sharp black suit sits at my table. “Good evening, sir.” He nods in greeting and lays his bet on black number 6. From the corner of my eye, I watch Jason slowly stride to the poker table.

“No more bets, please,” I say, and a second later, I spin the wheel.

I split my attention between the two tables for the next thirty minutes after Jason gets called away when my gentleman takes his winnings, a significant amount, and cashes out before leaving the casino.

It’s almost closing time, and I’m tidying up my table when raised voices from across the room draw my attention. I look over to see Penn has placed a round of drinks down at the poker table and is stepping back away. Her face is expressionless, but her eyes tell me exactly how she feels; tense and intimidated.

Stepping from behind my own table, I quickly walk over. Penn sees me, and her eyes are thankful.

“Is there a problem here, gentlemen?” I ask, looking at each of the men in turn before focusing on the same man I warned Jason about earlier.

“No problem. Just chatting to this hot piece of ass here, but she’s being a frigid bitch.” He reaches out a hand toward me. “You look like you could be a good time. Are you a good time, darling?”

His friends laugh, but it’s uneasy, and I get the impression he’s the troublemaker of the group and this is a common occurrence on a night out with these four.

Taking his hand and turning it away from me, I say, “I think that your good time is over, sir. Perhaps your friends here”—I raise a brow at the man closest to me—“should help show you the way home.”

His mate rises to his feet and begins collecting his friend’s chips, although there aren’t many. He himself has a much bigger pile.

“Come on, Darryl, let’s get you home. I think lady luck is done for the night.”

The rest of Darryl’s friends follow suit, and I nod to Penn for her to leave them to me. She hurries off back to the bar where the dark-haired girl from the staff lounge is waiting for her.

I direct Darryl, who suddenly seems to have been hit by the amount of JD he’s drunk tonight, and his mate to the exit while the other two cash out their chips before following their friends out the door.

“Sorry about him. He’s…”

“A pain in the ass on a night out,” I finish for him with a small smile, although that probably wasn’t what he was going to say at all.

“Yeah, something like that.” He grins widely, then holds his hand out. “Tristan.”

I give his hand a shake. “Kennedy. Enjoy the rest of your night.”

“Thanks. Maybe I’ll see you again.” He flashes his eyebrows giving away his interest.

“Maybe. Night, Tristan.”

They are the last ones out the door, and I leave the doormen to it. I finish up with my table and take the cash to Jason who is in the office.

“Hey,” I say, giving a gentle knock on the open door.

“Ahh, Kennedy, come in.”

I step inside the room and place the cash box down on the desk in front of him., then I take in the office, noting the cameras on one wall that monitor the whole of the building.

“I was watching in case you were wondering. You handled yourself well tonight.”

“It’s not the first time I’ve dealt with overzealous customers who’ve had one too many drinks or who have a huge ego and think everyone wants a piece of them. Comes with the territory in an environment like this.”
