“No, I did not. I swerved to avoid it and that’s why I lost control.”

“And were you distracted at any point during your journey?”

“You mean aside from when an animal jumped out in front of me?” I roll my eyes. “What sort of question is that?”

He picks up the bag containing my phone and places it in front of me. “Do you recognize this, Miss. Scott?”

“Yes, it’s my phone.”

“This was found in the footwell of the passenger side of your car. Can you tell me how it got there?”

“Jesus Christ. I crashed my car, so I imagine it came free of the holder. Why is this important?”

“Were you on your phone at the time of the accident, Miss. Scott?”

It’s clear he doesn’t believe my version of events, and initially I had thought he was trying to imply the involvement of another car, even though that is in fact the case. But now I see he’s trying to blame me for the accident. No doubt wanting to do me for dangerous driving.

The other issue is that if I tell him I was actually on the phone, he’ll want to know why and to whom. Ultimately, Everly will be questioned, and I had hoped to avoid that, but I see that’s not going to be possible because if he hasn’t already, all he needs to do is check my phone records to see that I was talking to Everly at the time of the accident.

“Yes, I was on the phone at the time of the accident. Talking to Everly via bluetooth. I’m not really sure what relevance that has. It’s not illegal to talk on your phone while driving using bluetooth.”

“It’s very relevant, Miss. Scott. It means that depending on your conversation with Miss. West, your attention may not have been fully focused on the road.”

“My attention is no longer fully focused on this conversation. I’m not sure what you’re implying, Deputy Peters, but I don’t like it. I’ve given you my statement, so now I’d like my belongings back and to go home,” I tell him, getting to my feet. For a second, I think he’s going to stop me from leaving, but then he gets to his feet.

“Very well. You’re free to go. But I might need to talk to you again.”

After signing a couple of documents for the release of my purse and phone, he shows me out. Then he continues to watch me as I walk down the street.

Once I’m far enough away, I switch my cell on and call Everly. She doesn’t answer, so I leave a message asking her to call me as soon as possible.

I’m just ending the call and switching over to make another one when I happen to look up and catch a glimpse of a very familiar face among a crowd of people moving toward the beach. Almost like they felt my eyes on them, they turn this way, and I duck out of sight. Peeking around the tree, I get a clear view of their face this time, and I can’t believe it.

What the fuck is Owen doing here?

ChapterThirteen

Iwatch as Kennedy walks down the street, her purse in a clear plastic bag hanging from her fingers and her cell to her ear. She stops, finishing her call, then I watch as she looks down the street before practically diving behind a large tree.

I scan further up the street trying to see what spooked her, but other than a crowd of people all heading to the beach, I don’t see anything obvious.

“Something interesting out there?” Eli calls from behind me.

“No, nothing,” I reply, but keep my eyes on Kennedy as she turns around and heads back this way. “I need to head out for a second, can you cover for me?”

“Sure, whatever you need, man,” he says, but I’m already halfway out the door.

Jogging down the stairs, I exit the station just as Kennedy turns down the adjacent street. I almost call out to her, but then I notice she’s on her phone again and instead follow after her. This seems to be a regular occurrence lately.

“Yes, but how did he know where I am?…No, of course I’m not saying you told him. I know you wouldn’t do that, but it doesn’t make sense, Charlie.” She stops abruptly and I’m so close behind her, I can’t stop before crashing into her.

“…What the actual fuck!” she hollers as my hands shoot out and grab hold of her biceps, preventing her from falling flat on her face.

“It’s just me,” I whisper in her ear, and I hear her breath hitch, then feel the air rush from her lungs at the sound of my voice.

“Charlie, I’ll call you back.” She ends the call, and I release her arms, sliding one around her waist instead and gently drawing her into my body. “Are you fucking following me, Asher?” She sounds breathless, and my dick stands to attention.

“Not following exactly,” I growl, closing my eyes and breathing in her scent. “But who the hell is Charlie?” I try to sound casual but fail miserably. There’s a definite edge to my voice, and Kennedy picks up on it too.
