“You’re kidding, right?” I ask, completely pissed at the whole situation.

“No, Asher. Please go.”

“Come on, Ash. Let’s leave them to it,” Jackson says, ushering me back in the direction of the station. I see the smug as fuck look on Owen’s face, and I want to break more than his damn nose. “Heads up at eleven o’clock.”

Dragging my eyes away from Kennedy and Owen, who is still trying to stem the bleeding from his nose, I turn around and see Deputy Peters standing on the steps of the police station with his hands resting on his belt watching. As soon as he knows I’ve seen him, he switches his focus from me to Kennedy.

I change direction and head toward him, but Jackson stops me. “Leave it alone, Ash. He’s just trying to get under your skin.”

“It’s fucking working. He’s been riding my ass about the break-in, but more than that, he’s got it in for Kenz too.”

“What break-in?” Jackson demands, and I realize there’s a lot that I’ve not told him.

I scrub a hand down my face as we enter the station. “The chick I went home with the other week from the pub, her dad’s house got broken into the next night. And of course, our resident jerk of a cop has my name in the frame. Turns out her dad is Preston—”

“Thomas, the Delaware candidate for the senate.”

I stop and turn to him. “How do you know that?”

He shrugs. “My dad told me. Apparently, there’s some chat in the news surrounding some guy he’s friends with or some shit. I thought you knew and just wanted to add a senator’s daughter to the other thousand notches on your bedpost.” He slaps me on the shoulder and winks.

I roll my eyes and start walking again. “Yeah, ‘cause I really need the drama.” We reach the small room I use to sleep in. The same room I fucked Kenz in all those years ago. I shake the thought from my head as Jackson closes the door behind him.

“I take it that guy is Owen?”

“Yeah, looks that way. How’d you go with Everly?” I ask, hands on my hips and pacing the room.

“She barely gave me anything, claims she doesn’t know any more than us. She did say that Kennedy mentioned being followed the night before by the same car. She said that Kennedy hasn’t mentioned a boyfriend, although she did mention someone called Charlie.”

“That’s who she was on the phone to just now.” My mind wanders to whether this Charlie and Kennedy were having an affair, but I dismiss it when I remember what Kennedy said about ending things before fucking someone else. Besides, Kennedy isn’t a cheat. Honestly, I’m surprised Owen still has his balls left.

“She’s some Brit chick called Charlotte—”

“Hold on, Charlie is a chick?” I ask, more than a little confused.

Jackson laughs. “You thought Charlie was another man, didn’t you?” I give a nonchalant shrug. “And you expect me to believe there’s nothing between you two. Yeah, that ain’t happening.”

“Shut the fuck up, Jackson. What did you find out about where she’s working?” I ask, steering him away from that topic.

“Oh, well, you’re really going to love this. Kennedy is working at The Boulevard in Tungsten Bay for—”

“Jason Cruz” I finish Jackson’s sentence knowing full well who owns that casino. “Jesus Christ.”

“Yeah, my thoughts exactly.”

The alarm goes off and there’s a flurry of movement outside the door.

“Find Everly and find out if Kennedy is planning on going to work tonight. I’m hoping not, but this is Kennedy we’re talking about. Are you working tonight?”

“Nah, night off. I worked last night. That’s how I got to Kennedy so fast.”

“Good. I need you to keep an eye on her and especially Owen.”

There’s a knock at the door. “King, time to go,” Eli calls before hurrying away.

“I need to go but check in with me later.” He turns to leave, and I stop him. “Jackson…” He turns back, looking at me expectantly. “Thanks,” I say, but it wasn’t what I’d planned to say. I need to talk to him about his dad, but I can’t do it now when I’ve no time to explain.

He frowns, then nods before disappearing out the door. I follow a few minutes later catching up with the rest of my team.
