Chapter 56

Stormy

Tomorrow was my wedding, and the docs were doing their best to make sure I’d be released this afternoon. Dr. Kelly should be in. Gambit sat in the chair next to me and sounded asleep. He’d gotten very little since the night of my abduction. Two days after they brought me in, the doctors decreased the meds. Weaning me off them took another day. Add another eighteen hours before I regained consciousness, and my poor sweet man was beyond exhausted.

I can’t help but remember when I opened my eyes for the first time. My head felt thick and foggy. When I opened my eyes, they were met with the bluest eyes I’d ever seen. Eyes full of love and joy.

“Bébé, you're awake. Thank the Gods you’re awake.”

He brushed a gentle kiss on my lips before hitting the call button. When the nurse asked what we needed, he told them I was awake. A few minutes later I was surrounded by staff, and he had to wait outside.

Gambit came back in as soon as he could. He told me he’d run to the waiting room to tell everyone I was awake. We spent the next couple hours visiting with each member of the Kings from the patched brothers to the bunnies. Even Bay came to visit me. Over the last few weeks, she’d taken the time to get to know me without the influence of Gretchen or Stazie.

He spent that night wrapped around me in the small hospital bed. One of the nurses tried to fuss at him but he’d growled at her and she ran from the room. When security informed her, he had clearance to be in my room, I thought the woman’s head was going to pop off her shoulders.

Gambit stayed by my side the next few days. Only leaving long enough to use the shower in my room. One of the prospects brought our meals. Hospital food blows. Nola spent hours with me every day going over last-minute wedding plans. Trinity insisted his restaurant do the catering for the rehearsal dinner and the wedding. We were having the rehearsal in the clubhouse. With dinner to follow.

Guests were free to arrive starting at midnight. We were getting married at eleven forty-five pm on Halloween night.

Gambit had brought in the Lafayette children the day after I woke up. I have to say I’m in love and if I could find their father, I’d feed him to the gators myself. All five of the children had the same creole coloring. With café au lait skin, dark hair and hazel eyes. Genevieve, or Geni as she liked to be called, was twelve going on thirty. Remy was seven with a quick smile and a precocious wit. The twins Acadia and Antoine just turned five.

Red had gotten them a few changes of clothes and I’d ordered most everything else online. The items were still arriving. Pops talked Gemini into whipping up simple dresses for the two girls. While the tailor worked overtime to make the boys’ suits matching the groomsman.

Nola came into the room whistling. She carried a garment bag and a square duffle. Boomer was outside standing guard. Gambit was in the shower.

“Ready to blow this popsicle stand?”

“Yes. Just waiting for Dr. Kelly to visit one last time. She’ll sign the release papers and I’ll be out of here.”

“Where’s bro?”

“In the shower. Did you bring him clothes too?”

“Yes. It’s all casual tonight.”

“I like that idea since the men are all wearing suits tomorrow night.”

“I can’t wait to see them all dressed up.”

“I can’t wait to become Mrs. Landry.”
